A teenage girl has died after suffering a severe allergic reaction to nuts. Molly Dyer, 13, from Whitefield, collapsed in front of her mum Meryl Matthews after eating a takeaway curry on Saturday night.

It is believed she suffered an anaphylactic shock after trying a curry for only the second time. Molly, of Lily Hill Street, Whitefield, was aware of her nut allergy and took some medication which initially made her feel better. But later her lips started to swell and she struggled to breathe.

Her mum Meryl, a nurse, dialled 999 and Molly was rushed to Fairfield hospital where doctors battled for four hours to try and save her - but tragically she died early on Sunday morning.

Meryl, 41, who works at Hope Hospital, said the family had been left devastated. She said Molly had a 'love for life'.

Meryl added: "She had such an energy for life and everyone she met would say she was wonderful. She could get on with anyone."

Dad Paul, 40, a pharmaceutical company manager, said: "She could hold a conversation with anyone, any age, and she would make them feel like they were the most important person to her."

Molly, a year 9 pupil at Castlebrook School in Bury, had dreamed of one day becoming a professional dancer and was due to start back at school today. A post mortem will be carried out to try and establish the exact cause of death. It is believed she had suffered from the nut allergy since the age of three.

Molly had just returned from a family holiday in Turkey and Wales before the tragedy.

A Facebook tribute site has been set up in her memory. One message said: "R.I.P- such a bubbly girl, so beautiful with a smile that could light up the room :) xx"

Headteacher at Castlebrook School, Antony Roberts, said: "The whole school community is devastated by the tragic death of Molly Dyer – a lovely, bright and intelligent young lady."
