SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is to recruit 12,000 temporary staff in the run-up to Christmas, it announced today.

The company will use its own checkout staff to identify potential new recruits and encourage them to apply for jobs.

Under a new initiative, workers at trial stores will encourage shoppers who show classic retail skills - such as friendliness and helpfulness - to consider joining the retailer.

New positions will be available at 780 stores across the UK during the festive period.

Tesco retail director David Potts said: "With 12,000 roles to fill this year, this is going to be quite a challenge - so we're enlisting our existing staff to help us."

He said shoppers were the first to tell the supermarket how to improve what it does.
