Holes in one? We’ve got them down to a tee

Tony Barton, 59, and Mike Perkin, 71, both holed shots off the tee during the round at Marple Golf Club, Stockport.

Two veteran golfers proved they are a pair of aces – after both hitting a hole in one during the same round.

Tony Barton, 59, and Mike Perkin, 71, both holed shots off the tee during the round at Marple Golf Club, Stockport.

Using a seven wood retired Mike, from Glossop, struck first at the par three 160-yard second hole.

He said: “As soon as I hit it I knew it was a good one.

“I thought there was a chance it had gone in. I walked up with trepidation and there was my yellow ball, nesting in the hole.”

The pair were playing in a fourball and were soon celebrating again when Tony, from Heaviley, repeated the feat at the par three 17th – also 160 yards long.

He said: “I hit it straight with my rescue wood and thought it had gone past.

“But I couldn't see it as we went up. I looked in the hole and there was the ball with my initials on.”

After finishing the remarkable round the group then headed for the clubhouse.

Mike, who has a handicap of 19, said: “I didn't think they would believe us. We were gobsmacked ourselves. The chances of it happening must be in the hundreds of thousands.”

But Tony, who plays off 27, said he was less surprised.

He said: “After Mike hit his I just had a feeling I would get one. I don't know why because I have only been playing for 16 months and I've heard 80 per cent of golfers never get one but I just had a feeling.”

It was not all good news though for Mike.

He said: “It was a great day but it was also a dear do.

“We had to put two bottles of whisky on the bar, as is tradition, and I split my pants and had to get a new pair.”

The remarkable round came just weeks after Mike Courtney, 51, struck twice at Rochdale's Springfield Park.

The Moston dad-of-three, who plays off a handicap of 11, hit holes-in-one at the 10th and 16th defying odds of 67 million-to-one.

its so obvious they've done this as a way of getting their faces in the news.

I won two games of monopoly in a row last night. Mike Keegan of the MEN, please come round and interview me. bring your photographer. actually, bring a film crew, i fancy being on the telly.

The story clearly says their playing in a group of four, they have witnesses.

Plus they had to shell out for drinks at the clubhouse, it'd be cheaper to take out an ad in the MEN than to get in the paper this way.

This is clearly untrue.

I've never managed to finish a game of Monopoly ever without dying of boredom first, let alone play two games in one night. It's a well known fact that a complete game of Monopoly takes at least a week to play.
