Family's farewell to 'little angel' Semelia Campbell

Hundreds of people gathered to bid farewell to Semelia, who was crushed to death by an electric gate in Moss Side on June 30.

The grief-stricken family of six-year-old Semelia Campbell have paid tribute to their 'little angel' at her funeral.

Hundreds of people gathered to bid farewell to Semelia, who was crushed to death by an electric gate in Moss Side on June 30.

Mourners watched as a horse-drawn carriage brought the youngster to church in a small white coffin.

A hearse led the procession from Main Place, Moss Side, where the tragedy happened, to the 7th Adventist Church, on Wilbraham Road, bearing a floral tribute which spelt out 'Semelia'.

It carried the message: “You will always be in our hearts. Sadly missed. Love Mum and Dad Sister and Brothers. Rest in Paradise our little Angel Sweet Semelia”.

Another bouquet carried the note: “Little Angel Semelia, wishing your absence was only a dream. From lunchtime organisers Kim, Pat, Claire, Susan and Jacinta.xxx”

The private two-hour service featured songs and hymns, including How Great Thou Art, and a special eulogy with a photo slide show.

Semelia's family and school teachers addressed the congregation with personal tributes, and then mourners were each given the chance to share their memories.

The youngster's friends from the Divine Mercy RC Primary School all wore yellow T-shirts bearing the name Semelia.

Following the funeral, her body was taken to Southern Cemetery in Chorlton where she was laid to rest.

Semelia was playing with her best friend at her home at Maine Place on June 30, when she was killed.

She became pinned against a brick post as a motorised parking gate closed.

Her mum Judith Gilroy, neighbours and police rushed to the scene and fought frantically to break her free.

But by the time officers stopped the gate's motor and physically wrenched it back, it was too late.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate Semelia but she was declared dead in hospital soon after. It is understood she suffered a heart attack as well as crush injuries.

Health and safety watchdogs and Greater Manchester Police have launched a joint investigation into the death.

Two people have been arrested and bailed on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence.
