Protesters plan joint demo in airport row

Campaigners are preparing for a day of protest at plans to expand Manchester Airport.

Members of Stop Expansion at Manchester Airport are teaming up with the Fight the Flights at London City Airport group to stage a joint demonstration at both airports.

They plan to hold a morning protest outside City Airport, London, before boarding an open-top double-decker red bus to raise awareness of their anti-expansion message.

The protesters will call for an end to domestic flights and instead will urge commuters to ‘take the train, not plane’.

They will then catch a train to Manchester to voice their opposition to plans to bulldoze two family homes on Hasty Lane, Ringway, to make way for a cargo unit.

The event, on Saturday, September 4, will culminate in a party on Hasty Lane with residents who stand to lose their homes when the three-bedroom detached properties are demolished and replaced with an 18,000 square metre hangar, off Runger Lane.

A spokesman for the protest called on campaigners to make it a ‘fun day of aviation activism’.

It will be the latest in a string of protest events since airport bosses were granted permission to pull down the cottages on Hasty Lane in November.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said: “Long-term forecasts for air cargo demand remain robust and our existing transit units are all occupied. Our proposal to continue with the development of this new unit will give us an opportunity to have modern facilities in place to take advantage of the economic recovery ahead of competitor airports.”

Remember all the protests about the second runway.
How the airport defence was that the new runway would add to the airport facilities to such a degree that 50,000 jobs would result.
When would it be appropriate to ask where all these jobs are?
A similar defence will be put forward for this development.

"They plan to hold a morning protest outside City Airport, London, before boarding an open-top double-decker red bus to raise awareness of their anti-expansion message"

Slightly hypocritical since busses use far more fuel and produced more CO2 per person than planes do.

Plans to expand the airport? What about all the airlines and flights that no longer operate there?

Approximately 18,000 are employed at the airport.
The other 32,000 ?

take a ride up to the cargocentre today and see how many units are empty and un-occupied. despite incentives offered by the airport , many of these units have been empty for years now . the cargocentre is now a pale shadow of itself only a few years ago ,

As are the passenger terminals...

Good on them! Fed up with the airport trying to claim it is "green" when there's no such thing and the council blatantly ignoring it from its own emissions reductions plan.
