Boddingtons to close with loss of 55 jobs

MORE than 50 jobs are to go after the owners of Boddingtons Brewery announced it was to close.

Interbrew UK said it intends to close the Strangeways operation by the end of February 2005.

The company says it is looking to keep Boddingtons cask ale production in the area, with a preferred option of transferring it to Manchester-based Hydes Brewery, which brews Trophy under contract for Interbrew.

Non-cask ales produced at Boddingtons will be transferred to Interbrew breweries in Salmesbury, near Preston, Magor in South Wales and Wellpark in Glasgow.

Steve Cahillane, chief executive of Interbrew UK and Ireland said: "To reach this position on Boddingons Brewery has been extremely difficult, particularly because of the tremendous commitment shown by all of the employees at the brewery."

What do you think of Interbrew's decision? Have your say.

Didn't this blow up a couple of years ago? And wasn't there a big campaign to keep the Cream of Manchester Mancunian? And weren't Interbrew forced to back down?

So wouldn't it save everyone time and effort if they just backed down again now and saved all the hassle?

Cheers to all the employees at Strangeways brewery, was enjoyable while it lasted. Thats the last pint of Boddies I will ever drink. Shame on interbrew, who say that they want "local brand beverages to be strong and closely connected with their local consumers."

Steve Cahillane did not come to Belfast when Interbrew recently announced 85 job losses........boycott Boddingtons and Stella Artois...ditch all their brands now.

My father worked at Boddingtons man and boy, as a child I visited many times - happy memories of a content atmosphere and a pride of something local with real appeal.

The premises have a real history (infamously a young Ian Brady worked at the Brewery for a short time) and more importantly a unique water source - so wherever they make Boddingtons it won't be 'Boddingtons' unless it is made at Strangeways.

Daigeo the guinness company gave their employees some very handsome redundency packages. Lets hope the anchester and Belfast people get better. Well Interbrew is the second biggest brewer in the world and not short of a few pound.

The only way to stop this madness is to boycott ALL interbrew brands until they see sense. The Cream of Manchester must be brewed in Manchester! Get your name down on the petition @ www.savethecream.com

Yet again Interbrew have demonstrated their lack of committment to being 'the worlds local brewer'. Their true colours were displayed 2 years ago with their aborted attempt to shut down Boddingtons. After the dust has settled and with a slim downed workforce they have come back in for the kill, which is un-suprising behaviour of such a multinational predator. Two years ago Interbrew realised that the Boddingtons site was in a prime development area and decided to cash in on this, demonstrating little regard for the history of the brewery and its close association with Manchester. The value of the Boddingtons site has continued to rise over the last 2 years making it even more tempting for interbrew to cash in. What they have failed to realise is that the value of their property has risen due to the massive social and economic improvement of manchester, which is increasingly attract more and more visitors to our fine city every year, whom wish to sample everything mancunian, including its beer. When interbrew spout figures about sales of beer in the uk and compare them to 20 years ago think about what car you were driving then and then. How things have changed ... and of course peoples drinking habits have changed, but interbrew you do need to use a better argument than that and come out and tell us the true reason why you are selling Boddingtons. Good luck to the devoted workers of boddies..Gary Hobson
