Nursery in probe after TV revelations

A PRIVATE nursery in Greater Manchester is one of three under investigation after a TV documentary raised concerns about the treatment of children, it emerged today.

BBC reporter Lizz Brown went undercover as a volunteer at the nurseries and claimed she found evidence of children being verbally abused, hygiene breaches and understaffing.

The nurseries had all previously been approved by inspectors from the education watchdog Ofsted, the BBC said.

In Nurseries Undercover: The Real Story, on BBC1 tonight, secret filming will show staff shouting at children.

The nurseries involved are Bank House Day Nursery in Blackburn Street, Radcliffe; Little Treasures, in Stoke-on-Trent; and Petits Enfants, in Teddington, Middlesex.

In a statement to the BBC, Ofsted said it was investigating the nurseries.

Brown alleged the Radcliffe nursery had problems with understaffing and did not always follow rules on staff numbers.

But a boss of the Radcliffe nursery rejected claims that staff flouted Ofsted guidelines.

Jenny Rivers, co-director of Bank House, said she was "disgusted" that the BBC was allowed to film children without obtaining consent from parents.

She said complaints about the programme were with a solicitor and that parents were sticking by the staff.
