Comic legend Frank Sidebottom is backing England to go all the way in South Africa – with a hilarious new World Cup song.
The papier mache-headed funnyman hopes Three Shirts On My Line will top the charts and raise money for cancer charities.
Frank gave the M.E.N an exclusive performance at The Salutation pub off Oxford Road. The song is inspired by his mother and his collection of England shirts – home, away and ‘goalie’.
He said: "It is my official unofficial World Cup song and all the money that I raise from the single will be going to charity.
"I think it’s that good that Wayne Rooney will be singing it when he comes back from the World Cup."
The man behind the cult comic, Chris Sievey, is recovering from an operation to remove a tumour in his chest. Since his diagnosis he has been raising money for charity.
Speaking to the M.E.N. as Frank, he said: "I am very well and I’m feeling fantastic.
"The song just rolled off my tongue, faster than a fast-speed washing machine. I asked my mum where my England shirts were and she said that she had washed them.
"I looked outside and there were three shirts on the line. I thought that it is a brilliant idea for a song. Thirty-five years of dirt washed out by my mum."
A one-minute taster of the song is available for free via Frank’s official MySpace website.
It is also available for download at a cost of 75p on iTunes from Monday.
