How I catch the ‘green’ fakers red handed. . .

Psychologist Geoffrey Beattie

Body language gives away ‘green fakers’, claims a top psychologist.

Geoff Beattie says those who pretend to be concerned about the environment can be betrayed by their gestures and facial expressions.

The Manchester University professor – who is also a consultant on Channel 4’s Big Brother – has studied dozens of VIPs and celebrities – from Tony Blair to comedian Les Dennis – while they discussed ‘green’ issues and says those putting on concern about global warming can easily be spotted.

The psychologist examined video recordings of people with differing views on the environment as part of a wider study into attitudes on green issues.

He said that hand movements and facial ticks could reveal a huge gap between what individuals – including some politicians – were saying and what they actually believed.

He said: “Explicitly, people may want to save the planet and appear green, but implicitly they may care a good deal less.

“While speech can be consciously edited and controlled, gestures are difficult, if not impossible, to edit or control in real time, and so the true thoughts and feelings of the speaker may become manifest in the gesture.

“We need to work on the hearts and minds of such individuals to produce attitude change.”

The research has been published as a book – Why Aren’t We Saving The Planet? A Psychologist’s Perspective – in which the researcher argues more needs to be done to change attitudes to green products.

Prof Beattie, who is head of the university’s psychology school, has made regular appearances on TV and radio as well as being the consultant for every series of Channel 4’s hit reality show Big Brother.

“We need to work on the hearts and minds of such individuals to produce attitude change.”

Lets just rephrase that a little to say what it really means.

We need to change that thinking which is unacceptable to us. Everyone must hold the true belief, deviation from the true belief is heresy. Everyone must hold the beliefs that I believe in.

Of course this is also called mind control, and has become a major desire of the liberal left, it has been a part of the hard left ever since it's conception - see George Orwells 1984.

Thank goodness that people are able to hold differing views, despite the efforts of politicians, what we really need to work on is the sad fact that people cannot express these views without others stooping to vicious name calling.

It should be completely acceptable to say that the global warming theory is wrong or unproven, and others should be able to put the opposite point in a civilised manner. Unfortunately thanks to people like this we cannot.

Earning money from TV appearances and selling books would seemingly depend on the author(s) having something new to say, although what previously undiscovered pearls of infinite wisdom Prof.Beattie is trying to cast before the proverbial swine here I'm not sure.He sure as eggs is telling me nothing new about politicians.

For me, academics flirting with the concept of celebrity immediately lose credibility.

You mean between what their saying and what you beleive they beleive, not what they actually beleive as only they know this.

What about the scientists who use incorrect data to promote their own self interests?

Being Green is the religion of the new millennium and if you dare question any of the claims then you are denounced and burnt at the stake as a witch.

Any scientist who does question global warming etc suddenly finds it very hard to get funding.

The push to make people green is more to do with the economy then the planet.

It would be greener if people continued to drive around old cars - even large 4x4s' maybe even converting them to run on LPG, but NO the greenies would have you get rid of your old car and buy a new more efficient one - forget the damage that manufacturing a new car causes (Which is more than driving an existing 4x4 for the rest of your life).

However think how devastating it would be for the economy if people actually stopped buying new cars!

Lets imagine you haven’t built any new power stations despite knowing that in the coming years you are going to need them, your existing ones are now approaching capacity.
Do you invest the billions required? Or do you force everyone to use less power by allowing the power companies to astronomically inflate prices and outlaw old style light bulbs to eek out a few more years from your infrastructure?

And at the end of the day we have guys like this telling us he call tell who is lying.
Mate if you knew who was lying you wouldn’t be so “Green”

Some people are good at noticing fakers of all kinds form all walks of life. Mannerisms and whats coming out of the mouth, tones, facial expressions, eyes. Even the dead good liars are not good enough not to be noticed.

I agree, but thankfully arch-sceptics like Monckton who has made a career out of paid talks to sceptic audiences have now been spectacularly exposed and discredited. Just take a look at http://bit.ly/8Z3YHS

Amongst genuine scientists there will always be genuine scientific critique - it's exactly that process that has revealed the evidence for man-made climate change as being as strong as it is, but for us civilians, we just need to make sure our politicians deliver us a future with a happy safe place to live, with sustainable green jobs and a working economy and not try and buy us off with the kind of short-term "buy a load of stuff now, think later" consumerist economics of the past.

"buy a load of stuff now, think later" consumerist economics of the past."

Oh good grief - thats EXACTLY what the current green movement is about.
The "Stuff" we have now is dirty smelly ugly, its destroying the planet!

INSERT hysterical women screaming "Won't someone think of the children?"

You have to buy NEW stuff, clean fragrant and cuddly stuff to take you to your "Happy Place"

No we don't. We need to encourage them to say what they truly believe especially if it is sceptical of the great AGW fraud.

The planet doesn't need saving, by the greenies or anyone else.

Geoffrey Beatties facial expressions in the photo above tell me all I need to know!

The fact he is involved with "Big Brother", has appeared on TV and radio and uses such hackneyed cliches such as "hearts and minds" confirms my suspicions.

Is he himself concerned with green issues - or the money, fame and glory that comes by tenuously linking his psychological experience into the topical subject of climate change?

no psychologist worth his salt would have anything to do with Big Brother,This fellow is on the same level as Derek Acorah and mystic meg.
If the education budget needs cutting could i suggest starting with this professor!

Looks like this column has given Prof. Beattie the reality check he so obviously needs!
