The man behind the new Wembley Stadium, the Gherkin, and the Millennium Bridge has been recruited to create a new hospital in Manchester.
Stockport-born Norman Foster has been appointed to design the 600-patient ‘health campus’ in Didsbury.
The hospital, which will occupy the former Withington Hospital site, off Princess Parkway, will have facilities to carry out scans, tests and operations and will be able to provide intensive care for people following complex surgery.
It will mainly cater for private patients but bosses at healthcare partnership Circle, which is behind the project, also hopes to gain contracts from the NHS.
Lord Foster’s plans, which have been put to Manchester council, describe how the campus will take advantage of nature, streaming natural light through the building. It will create ‘healing gardens’ and courtyards, to aid patient recovery and create a ‘calm and natural environment’.
Rory Coonan, of Health Properties (South Manchester) Ltd – Circle’s design and acquisitions team – said: “We chose Norman because we wanted someone who was a proven innovator and can bring that to hospitals – a building type in need of refreshing.
“This will be a landmark building. It will bring to Manchester a beacon for 21st century healthcare, working in partnership with the other providers in the city’s growing world class health sector.”
The firm, which has already built a Foster-designed hospital in Bath, says it has more than 100 surgeons and clinicians who want to be involved in the bigger, Manchester project.
It is hoping to win planning permission for the building this summer. Work would start next spring and be completed by autumn 2012.

MMMMMMMMMM not sure this is what we need dont we have enough hospitals around Withington, Wythenshawe, The Alex and a few others
Didsbury?????????????????????????????????????????
It's Withington Hospital.............the clue's in the name!
Not only is it in Withington but Foster has designed very expensive experiments in art and not functional buildings with any real thought for energy efficiency or renewables energy provision. And most of his designs have been hit design faults that were expensive to repair. This is just another incident of 'The Emperor's clothes'.

How much is his fee? How many extra beds would that build? Its not what the hospital looks like, its what happens inside the hospital and getting the right staff.
When is M22 going to intergrate with the Cheshire set as this would help with house prices in my area and It would suite all of Wythenshawe just like Didsbuy's elite will soon benefit from a trendy private hospital. BOOOO
Please can someone tell me who has the power to move existing boundaries in this way?
Discusted!!
It's a private hospital. Read the article before you go spouting off about waste.

SNF wants to get stuck into providing Manchester city centre with a few landmark buildings aswell - have you seen the Liverpool waterfront - it will be stunning in a few years. Manchester needs to assert itself in the Skyscraper league - Are you listening CITY COUNCIL !!
Bendroflumethiazide, manchester
Manchesters greatest asset was the river medlock and the irwell, but MCC in its wisdom culveted most of the medlock rather than open it up to the public, when i was a child we used to have a great bridge on downing street where the mancunian is now built.what a missed opportunity by the council..thrash and burn is the councils idea of design...we dont need any more vertical blocks of glass and steel .
Zingo, the moon
You miss my point (literally) - Manchester is a city of lost opportunities - the Beetham tower stands out like a sore thumb at present - Great cities around the world have a nucleus of skyscrapers at their cores. Which give every great city a vision of power. Liverpool - if developed with this in mind will be a stunning city visually for those that view it around the world. Bit like Sydney today.

Well I tend to side with Blue Brit.....we have an incompetent council.....I note that there will be some NHS involvement.....why? so there can some veneer of inclusivity to it?.....ultimately, the man on the street will pay Foster's fee. I'd, more pertinently, like to know far more about this project.....such as how much is the council going to get for the land.....what exactly are the terms of the deal? traffic implications?/////and can someone tell me why all the 100-ish surgeons and clinicians are gagging at the prospect of working there? it could't be cos of possible cuts could it?
