Entitled Picturing the Past, the show comprises paintings, drawings, collages and 3D works on two main historical themes - the American Civil War and Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale.
It will have pride of place in the Manchester Evening News exhibitions gallery at Manchester Art Gallery until August 8.
Pupils studying the Civil War theme discovered how opposing views on the slave trade culminated in a four-year war in which 800,000 died.
The exhibition includes colourful flags, blankets and costumes, with visual references taken from original documents and texts from the online American Library of Congress.
For the section on A Winter's Tale, the pupils created artworks which reflect life during the political and religious upheavals of Elizabethan and Jacobean times.
In total 35 schools, 60 teachers and 1,000 children were involved in the Manchester Arts Education Initiative.
