Karaoke-loving neighbours from hell are hit with Asbos

SINGING BAN: Damien Lang and Nataleigh Smith

A karaoke-loving couple who were prosecuted using laws normally enforced to curb noisy nightclubs have now been banned from singing in their own home.

Damien Lang, 35, and his partner, Nataleigh Smith, 25, were given three-year anti-social behaviour orders after breaching noise injunctions issued in 2008 after complaints from neighbours about loud music, fights and drinking in the street.

As well as banning them from singing, the new orders forbid them to play loud music, scream or chant in their home.

They are also prohibited from drinking alcohol in public other than in licensed premises, and from using foul, abusive insulting or intimidating language.

Lang and Smith both face prison if they breach the conditions. The case was heard in their absence after they both failed to attend Salford county court.

They were the first people in the north west to be prosecuted with legislation used by councils to tackle nuisance noise from clubs and bars.

But they were taken back to court again after they breached the injunctions 15 times with karaoke sessions and rows.

At the time of the injunctions the couple were living in Levens Street, Charlestown, but they have now moved to Thomas Court on Seaford Road, Salford.

The breaches all relate to the pair’s Charlestown address.

The court was told that on one occasion police were assaulted by Lang and Smith after responding to an anonymous phone call about screaming and banging inside their home.

And on several other occasions, neighbours were woken by people singing karaoke in Lang and Smith’s house, sometimes until 4.30am.

In August last year, after another night of karaoke, police were called to the couple’s address at 7.30am after reports about Lang and Smith arguing in their back yard.

A month later the two were fighting in the street between 1.30am and 2am. The arguing continued inside their house until 5am when they were arrested.

The new orders also ban the couple from being anti-social anywhere in the city and from pestering and harassing neighbours at Levens Street and their current Thomas Court address.

They are ordered not to argue with each other in a public place or at home causing harassment, alarm or distress to the public, ringing 999 unless their life or property is at risk or to report a criminal offence.

Don Brown, Salford council’s head of community safety said: "We’ve issued several warnings to this couple about their behaviour including previous court action which they have ignored.

"They have been offered support from a range of services but their continued anti-social behaviour has left us no other option but to take further action on behalf of residents.

"We won’t tolerate any behaviour which is a nuisance to a community and we hope this shows residents that when matters are reported, they are dealt with."

Won't tolerate? Maybe not in the long run, but it's obvious that this pair have no intention of following the demands the courts have handed to them. They didn't obey the injunctions, what chance is there of them obeying the Asbo? They didn't even bother to turn up at court, it's not something which concerns them in any way at all. This is a shinning example of how the current liberal 'justice' system doesn't work, if they had been birched each time they offended you can be sure that this story would not be being printed, and that they would have fallen in line.
No doubt the pair of them are living at the taxpayers expense? How about reducing their money until they learn?

How can the obnoxious ASBO be described as "liberal?" It is the turning of justice on its head.

I would love to have these as my neighbours: Never a dull moment. Go on the lash then have a good sing-song and then a right good punch up at the end of the night. People just don't know how to have a good time anymore: On a more serious note with the summer here we could throw in a barbeque as well. To look a them they look an adorable couple. I'd have a booze with them anytime. Neighbours just don't know how to enjoy themselves anymore. If they were good neighbours they should join in the fun with the party like neighbours used to do at one time. This couple just want to enjoy life and party, if anyone deserves an Asbo. It's the stick in the mud neighbours.

Neighbours from hell springs to mind. The pub is the place for this sort of activity. I am mindful that it is a poor judgment made from looking at a photograph.

4-30 in the morning eh? It does'nt mention whether the adorable couple are in employment or on social...if the latter then for being anti-social..stop the social! Simple.

This couple obviously need to go separate ways. When being in a relationship has jail time hanging over it, it´s time to call it a day.

Why do these sort of people always pose for the inevitable photo looking hurt and as if butter wouldn't melt? Bet they look just a bit different late at night with a skin full in them!
