YOUNG Indiana Joneses in Manchester are preparing to pick up their trowels and unearth the secrets of the past.

Hundreds of children will spend the summer digging up historical treasures at Moston Hall, in Lower Broadhurst Park.

It follows the success of the first archaeological dig last year in which nearly 250 children helped University of Manchester archaeologists uncover artefacts from the hall in celebration of Manchester's 150 years as a city.

The event proved so popular it resulted in the formation of the Moston and District Archaeological and Social History group.

Ashley McCormick, 13, from North Manchester High School for Boys, became so fascinated by the dig that he now sits on the group's committee.

He said: "We found interesting things and it really opened my eyes to Moston's history."
