It was a happy Sunday for music star Shaun Ryder after he married his long-term love Joanne to the surprise of family and friends at the weekend.
Happy Mondays frontman Shaun and Joanne had invited their nearest and dearest to St Charles RC Church in Swinton for the christening of their 10-month-old daughter Lulu. But they then surprised everyone by making it a double celebration and tying the knot straight afterwards at the nearby Court House in Worsley.
Joanne was given away by son Oliver at the civil ceremony at the 19th century building.
She and Shaun, who also have a two-year-old daughter Pearl, had told friends of a ‘big surprise’ in the lead up to the christening and Joanne had also changed her Facebook profile to ‘engaged’. But neither had openly told of their wedding plans before the big day.
Shaun’s manager, Warren Askew, confirmed the happy news. He said: “Congratulations to Shaun and Joanne on their wedding. It was a surprise to everyone after the baptism of Lulu, but was a really lovely day.”
The couple’s parish priest, Monsignor Paul Smith, joined in the congratulations.
Father Smith said: “The baptism was a nice family affair. They headed from here to their wedding at The Court House.”
It was believed to be an intimate affair for the couple who have been together for six years, with only close family friends invited to both events.
The wedding comes ahead of a hectic year ahead for former hellraiser Shaun, 47, who is planning a host of projects away from the Happy Mondays.
The Little Hulton-raised singer and songwriter recently announced he is reforming his Nineties band Black Grape for an April 1 gig.
The band last performed together in 1997, but will be back to play some of their biggest hits including Reverend Black Grape and In The Name of The Father, at the Get Loaded In The Dark festival in London.
Shaun is then due back in Manchester on April 4 to perform an exclusive gig at his musician pal Peter Hook’s new club The Factory.
New Order legend Hook has confirmed to the M.E.N. that Shaun will play his first solo live set at the Princess Street venue ahead of plans for him to release a greatest hits album in June.
