An Old Trafford steward sacked from his job after trying to return an anti-Glazer flag has claimed colleagues at United are bitterly divided over the protest.
Granville Boden, 53, was given his marching orders after he attempted to hand back a banner to fans who are campaigning against the club's US owners.
The flag was confiscated at the Burnley match last month and Mr Boden later tried to return it to its owners.
He was dismissed by security firm CES, who provide 500 staff at the Theatre of Dreams on match days.
Mr Boden, a steward of 19 years, said he was upset with the way the banner waving supporters had been treated and added that he was '100 per cent' behind their cause.
He also revealed that there was a standoff between stewards sympathetic to the Anti Glazer movement and those enforcing club policy after the incident.
Mr Boden, from Astley, said he understood the decision to sack him but added: “I stand by what I did. I did it because I love the club and it was the right thing to do.”
Tensions
He says that tensions among staff at the club are running high and explained: “The atmosphere in there is on a knife edge. You've got stewards who love United and stewards who just do a job and they are at each other's throats.”
Ian Stirling, 44, was the fan who had the banner, which read 'Love United, Hate Glazer', confiscated.
Mr Stirling claimed club officials are refusing to hand it back to him and has hit out at their 'ridiculous' actions.
He said: “We know what it's about. They won't let me have it back because they say I have to prove ownership. They took it off me and I gave them my details. They just don't want to give it back.”
A number of United fans have been ejected from Old Trafford since protestors launched their green and gold campaign.
Fans groups IMUSA and MUST have encouraged supporters to sport the colours of Newton Heath, the team which eventually went on to become United, under the slogan 'Green and Gold until the club is sold'.
Graham Jones, 50, said he and Martin, 27, were ejected during the Burnley game and also forced to miss a match after Old Trafford officials originally refused to return the season tickets they had confiscated.
Graham, a fan of 40 years, said security officers told them it was because they had been spotted chanting songs against the Glazers.
The pair were given their tickets back, but not before missing the victory over Hull City.
Apology
He is demanding an apology and a refund for the game they did not see.
Father-of-three Michael Wilcock , 37, said he and his 11-year-old son Jack were thrown out at the Portsmouth game last weekend.
He claimed he was politely asked to go under the stand to the concourse by stewards who then turned on him.
“We were surrounded by four or five stewards,” he said.
“They were just shouting at me. Jack was really shaken and upset. They confiscated one of the tickets and told us we would have to take it up with the ticket office.
“I'm 37 now and have been coming to United since I was a kid. I've been all over Europe and I've never had anything like this happen.”
“I was singing the same songs as 90 per cent of the rest of the ground I juts think I was an was an easy target. I was shocked to the core.”
A spokesman for United said both fans were ejected for not complying with ground safety rules.

Last time I looked only the Police could do it.
And the stewards have to return it to them as well, they have no power to confiscate anything.
Where in the Manchester United ticket rule book does it say you can't protest legally.
This guy should be looking for a solicitor, I think he's got a claim for unfair dismissal.

Yes, I suspect I know why. Since the 90's, there have been 2 seperate kinds of 'Stewards' at Old Trafford. Firstly, there are the 'traditional' Stewards that have always been there. I suspect Mr. Bowden falls into this category. These Stewards are United fans who give their time and effort because they love the Club. However, the other kind of Steward is the hired 'Bouncer' from CES ( formerly Ned Kelly's boys) who have long been known as always going in mob-handed and create more problems than they solve. It will be these comedians who tell United fans they can't wear green and gold scarves etc etc. I admire Mr Bowden for taking his stand, and his colleagues, many of whom have been there for years - however, the 'Rent-a-Mob' Stewards I have no time for. These guys think they have powers which they don't, like assaulting fans to steal Anti-Glazer banners. Against Burnley, when a LUHG banner appeared in the Stretford End, Rent-a-Mob went in to remove the banner, the fans who put up the banner and many fans who had nothing to do with the banner. United later came up with the desperate excuse that the banner was removed because it was covering the electronic scoreboard - and if an emergency had occured, instructions to the fans could not be read. When, at the Portsmouth game, another banner went up in the Stretford End, once again, Rent-a-Mob removed it. This banner was NOT near the scoreboard, but I have no idea why it was removed. Must just be the 'Thought Police' at Old Trafford once again. The activities of these Bouncers have caused problems in the past, and I can see over the next few games United fans coming into conflict when flags/scarves/banners/supporters are attempted to be illegally romoved.
Fergie and Gill have recently asked the fans to get behind the team. We are - we always have - but don't dare suggest we cannot voice our opinion about the Glazers. We always have, and we always WILL.
It's just sad United treat their own fans ( I include the REAL Stewards in that ) with such contempt.

Was a very poor crowd yesterday I admit. But are united not 7.000 season tickets down on last season - fact. And do they not advertise tickets for every home game. Those who say they can't get tickets don't want them. Your crowds will soon fall. Your years at the top will go along with Bacon face, Giggs & Scholes. Your era is closing make the most of it.

Yeah, and so did all the others in history who made a stand for their beliefes. The reason it will go pear-shaped at the Rue Morgue is because there are too many Rag supporters like you. Tickety tock.

Obviously we don't have the full facts here, but I'd at least go for some legal advice to see if there's any ground to challenge the dismissal. There may not be, but it's worth a go.
In terms of the confiscated banner, I would be enquiring if this is outlined in the terms and conditions of entry to the ground and if not I would be looking under what grounds the banner has been confiscated. As for not handing it back, I would certainly be challenging that and asking where the property is now. To avoid problems in future, fans could put their names on the banner, then there's no excuse to not hand them back.
If the ground if getting so hard line with people airing their views about the current owners then that surely says a lot more than a few banners do. I'm not a united or a city fan, so this is an unbiased post, but to me it shows United are worried and perhaps these fans have a good cause if such tactics are being used to try and silence the followers of a football club who clearly want what they see to be best for the club.

i spoke to a steward regards the 2nd banner that your talking about and the reason was that it was supposedly obstructing the view of the spectators below, alot of rubbish if you ask me,theres only one reason why theses banners are removed and no matter what anyone at utd says,we all know the truth.
