A teenager has died after an off-road bike with three people aboard crashed into a car.
Chris Mason, 18, was killed and his two friends seriously injured in the crash in Denton on Monday.
Police say it is unclear which of the three was driving when the collision took place just before 11.30am on busy Manchester Road.
Witnesses described how Chris, who lived on nearby Tame Street, was thrown over the handlebars and under a bus when the bike hit a Ford Focus which is understood to have come out of a side road.
His two friends, Lewis Addison and Scott Wilson, also understood to be in their late teens, were taken to hospital although their conditions were not thought to be life-threatening.
Traffic police closed Manchester Road at its junction with Stockport Road for four hours while an investigation began into the tragedy. No-one in the Ford Focus involved was hurt.
Chris's mum, Kerrie, paid tribute to him. She said: “He was a likeable, popular lad. He was good to me and to all his family. He was very sociable and one of the boys.
Heart of gold
“He enjoyed going out with his mates. He was a caring lad and had a heart of gold.”
The former Egerton Park pupil played for his local amateur football team, Audenshaw Gunners, and was a Manchester United fan. He was training to be a scaffolder and had two younger sisters.
A facebook group - R.I.P. Chris Mason – which was set up by friends of the teenager yesterday afternoon already had more than 1,000 members by 9pm.
Witnesses described how the teenager had tried to call for help after being thrown from the bike outside the NatWest bank.
One, a cafe worker, said: “I heard a loud crash and went running out. I saw one of the men crying and shouting. His head was bleeding and he was saying he had pain in his leg. Then I saw the other one under the bus trying to call for help. It was very upsetting.”
Anthony Watson, who works in Soul Food takeaway on Manchester Road, added: “We heard a loud motorbike and there were three lads on it. The front of the car was badly damaged. A lot of people gathered round and next thing the ambulances were there and one of the guys was taken away on a stretcher.”
A close friend, Lauren Andrew, paid tribute to Chris. She said: “He was really funny, he’d make everybody laugh and was always the centre of attention. Everyone is going to miss him round here. He was a lad’s lad. He liked going to parties and was the life and soul. I never saw him sad.”

Manchester is plagued by these off road bikes and the people who ride them illegally in the public place. This time it's one of the offenders who has suffered, but if it's done that damage to the car imagine what these lads could have done to a pedestrian or a child!
It's sad this lad has died, but they shouldn't have been 3 up on an offroad bike in the first place. Hopefully more people will pay attention and stop doing wrong like this. It's not safe, it's illegal and someone gets hurt or killed. If they don't break the law then we're all safer, including themselves.

Hopefully this will be a lesson to others that are riding round on off-road motorcycles. Though there will still be morons that think its fun. The sad matter of fact is that if these three hadnt done something that they know is dangerous and illegal, they would all still be alive.
I feel so sorry for the family.

However, mini mokes/motos are a menace. Just the other night a mini moto cut up the line of traffic and went through a red light just by Asdas in Shaw, no lights no helmet etc. An accident waiting to happen.

A car pulled out of a side road in front of a motorcycle and has killed someone.
When will car drivers get off their backsides and actually look before they put their tin boxes into gear? Yet again a life is lost because someone pulled out in front of someone without looking.
We don't yet know if the bike was stolen, or speeding or being driven dangerously. Yes it had 3 people on it (stupid!), yes it was an off road bike on the road (off road exhaust=very loud, so how could the car driver not hear it?)
My point is, even if the bike was legal and had one rider on, the outcome would probably be the same.
LOOK OUT FOR BIKES!!!

BUT WHY is it that when young people die in these dramatic but self inflicted circumstances does the media provide a platform and headlines saying how wonderful they were.
The story itself may well be balanced but the headline is not.

They took their chances and lost, be thankful nobody else was injured during their escapade in yobbery!

Sad but I agree with BluePurgatory, maybe a visit from the old bill would have nipped this behaviour in the bud before now.
I am specualting but as the police are investigating the ownership of the bike then the chances are it was stolen. Whoever stole this bike in the first place is also resposible for the lads death.
Sad as the story is it's lucky no one innocent was killed as well.

This is an awful incident and everyone sympathises with the victims and not least the poor bus driver but people have to take responsibility for their actions.
Illegal motor bikes are a nuisance.

Unfortunately we are going to have to get used to this kind of accident, and also pedestrians being hurt as necessary collateral damage from a Police force which has abandoned Policing.

as a resident of denton i see this kind of behaviour on a daily basis, cars and motorbikes etc screaming up and down "denton strip" like its a dragstrip.
im not one for camera's all over but if there was ever a road that needed camera's then this is it.
sadly,i don't think it will be the last death or serious injury around that area.
