A male-oriented society accused of celebrating 'Top Gear culture' has provoked a gender row at Manchester University.
Feminist students claim the Masculinity Exploration Networking and Support (MENS) group – promotes 'beard-growing contests', 'beer marathons' and macho culture.
But the founder of the group claims it has been misrepresented and instead exists to challenge blokeish stereotypes.
Student Ben Wild says he decided to set up MENS – the country's first student society dedicated to men – after discovering a lack of information on campus about male health issues.
He said: "We do have female members. Our events are open to everyone. It is in everyone's interests that we challenge the notion that the only way men can prove themselves is by getting drunk and getting girls into bed."
But the fledgling group has met huge opposition from those who accuse it of sexism.
It was only narrowly approved as a recognised society by the student union in a close-run vote.
Campus posters advertising the society being torn down and defaced.
Mr Wild, a 22-year-old politics and history student, said his group aimed to 'de-construct male identity'.
He confesses his critics may have got the wrong end of the stick because early suggested activities included a trip to the studio of BBC's Top Gear.
Mr Wild said: "It is the exact opposite of what we're about. We are not a political group, we are not saying men are under-represented. But certain things like male depression and male-on-male violence were not being looked at.
"One suggestion was that we went on a day trip to be in the audience for Top Gear. The show is seen as politically-incorrect and people who wanted to criticise us seized on this."
The 'men's liberation' group now has 320 members – 90 of whom are women and lists its activities as fund-raising, health-promotion, and providing emotional counselling.
But fellow politics student Caitriona Rylance accused the group of using health issues as a smokescreen.
Writing in the Student Direct newspaper, she said: "Ostensibly devoted to ‘self-betterment’, the original aims of the Men’s Society were as follows: Top Gear shows, gadget fairs, beer drinking marathons and Iron Man competitions.
"The proposed Men’s Society met with substantial opposition – from men and women alike – and began to talk more about men’s welfare."

On Saturday I treid getting into a lesbian bar in the village without success because I was a straight male. That is sexist.
I attend a male only event that has my wife harping on about. The lads have a good time on that day and it wouldn't be the same with women there. She doesn't want to attend as such but says that it is her right to be able to attend. Not without an invite it isn't.
I might invite myself on my neighbours hen night as it is my human right.

None of this matters and the twisted women who don't like it should grow up.

Come on girls (and as students I feel that's valid) what is it you want men to be? You don't seem to be sending a positive message as to what you do want, only a mess of petulant carping about what you don't!
Most of us know what we want in a man, and to be honest there are quite a few of us who actually like men to be men, I have to say I have no idea what you want because you consistently fail to portray a clear picture. No wonder they end up running for the security of a club just for them.
When you grow up you will realise that your actions have consequences, it's something that the left has striven to dissassociate from, and children are taught that their actions have no consequences. You are seeing a reaction to the world which you have helped to create, a little foresight before action will help an assessment of what the reaction of other people might think & do, rather than just shouting at the tops of your voices about the things 'you' want.

Please stop whinging, get on with your studies and stop giving the rest of us women a bad name! What next? Having a pop and the scouts and boys brigade? As it clearly states, women are not excluded, and I'm sure they'd be encouraged to join the beard growing competition were any of them be able to participate.
Women like you set the modern feminist movement back decades to the blinkered days of the 60s. You speak for yourself, not for me, and probably not for most other women who have a sense of humour and better things to do with their spare time. If you have so much spare time on your hands after studying perhaps you could do something productive like volunteering instead of just sniping at a bit of tongue in cheek fun. Or just go out drinking, fill your boots! ;o)
Best wishes

Ron gorton ,well said mate i was just about to mention that its sexist, not being allowed into a lesbian bar,but if you drseed up as a drag queen youd be welcomed with open arms, but i have noticed that the bar/club vanilla which is a lesbian club allows gay men as they arnt saw as a theat....sexist.

Girls, seriously, relax, stop protesting and check the group out first. Then make your judgements. Far too quick to jump on the pc bandwagon.
