‘£1m’ hoax 999 call actually cost £2,000

Tom Bardsley

PROSECUTORS have admitted they made an ‘inaccurate’ claim in court about the cost of responding to a hoax emergency call.

Tom Bardsley was jailed for making a 999 call which falsely claimed he had rescued a man from a Manchester city centre canal only for him to have jumped back in.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the callout cost £1m.

Bardsley won an appeal against his four month prison sentence after it emerged that the true cost was in fact £2,101.12.

The CPS has now admitted the initial figure was ‘inaccurate’ but following a two-week investigation, lawyers have been unable to provide any evidence of where it came from.

Bardsley, of no fixed address, was jailed by magistrates in September.

The judge at his appeal hearing this month ordered him to complete community service instead after the true cost of the 999 call emerged.

A police helicopter, two fire engines, six police officers, a fire service rescue boat and two ambulance crews were scrambled to Potato Wharf, in Castlefield, in November 2008, following Bardsley’s 999 call.

He served 15 days of his sentence before lodging the appeal and being bailed.

The 25-year-old army veteran first made headlines in May 2008 after claiming to have rescued a police officer from rioting Rangers football fans on the night of the Uefa cup final in Manchester.

A CPS spokesman said: “Undoubtedly, the defendant’s actions caused a huge disruption to the emergency services on the evening in question.

“The true human cost of the mobilisation of the public services in this way is extremely difficult to quantify. However, we accept that the quoted estimated figure of £1million was inaccurate.”

Put the lying CPS, and the cops in court now. They make you puke

It's still a suspiciously round figure.

Proper Sentence

This is just another bit of proof that the entire legal system in this country is about as legitimate as your average south american dictatorship. Even if you only go back to the West Midlands Serious Crime Squad, there are too many instances of police corruption and court collusion to mention. The list is almost endless. We were all so outraged at the Rodney King incident in LA, and LAPD officers getting away with it despite the video evidence, and yet the police here get away scott free with shooting a guy (an innocent guy) six times in the face, lie about it, get caught lying and then have no recriminations at all.

Lets face it. The legal system from top to bottom in the UK is rotten to the core. The IPCC means nothing. When the Attorney General herself breaks the law, and gets away with it by saying - oh, I had no idea!!! Then there is something very wrong. The whole judicial system and all associated with it is entirely un-regulated in reality. It is like the wild west with everybody doing just as they please and answerable to nobody!!!

But don't worry, there will soon be a story on these pages about some small time petty thief or benefits fraudster and everybody can post their outrage while wondering why this country is going to the dogs.

Andanothering thing - round figure? hardly "the true cost was in fact £2,101.12."

A police helicopter, two fire engines, six police officers, a fire service rescue boat and two ambulance crews were scrambled - what a bargain!

If the same thing happened near Ordsall or Lower Broughton, a pair of community support officers would have arrived two days later. Lucky the imaginary guy almost imginarily drowned in Castlefield. Phew. I bet his imaginary family are so relieved that the police do such a fine job when no job needs doing. In fact, I think I am may be the imagination of myself. My head hurts. Think I'll go lie down :)

What did the CPS think they were drafting in The Eighth Army ?

Ah yes thankyou Local_Lass, that will teach me to gob off before reading the article.

But, considering it can be costed down to twelve pence, it shows what a farce they made of the prosecution in the first place.

ER didnt this Crim commit a crime or do we forget that. If thred have been house fires at the same time someone could have died. Is taking the Pi** out of the emergency services a Manchester hobby it appears every week in this newspaper. But no surprised if people get let off on appeal

Salfordrat, comments are noted. In this country we are waiting for the one politition to change the world.
Everybody has had a go, even Dave Cameron has good intentions, however, there are limits. As Tony Blair found out. Promise the earth, run out of funds, raise taxes and piss the public off, onto the next fetish and hope the public forget really quickly, and so the cycle continues. MP's and MEP's find a a way of obtaining perks and suddenly values and things that were once important to them are now considered a hinderence and more trouble than it's worth. Only do the things that will keep them in office, and only kiss children and old ladies when nearing an election.
Unfortunately there is nobody strong enough to break this pattern that MP's have, it needs changing then other government agencies can also change.

All these stories about this chap is starting to make me wonder whether he really was the mystery man who stepped forward to save the cop from the rangers riots. Obviously I'll never know for sure, but I'm questioning it in my head when I read he's accused of faking this rescue and the other previous stories too....

Sorry Tom, let's take the focus off you, you are totally innocent in all this. How dare the Police and CPS over estimate the cost of the operation. Tom should be given another medal for what he has done.

As a norm where possible I try my best to support the police and the judicial system but in response to this story I have to say that I’m not surprised.
On two occasions this year I have had to call upon the police, once for when a group of youths assaulted my wife and myself using glass bottles as weapons and leaving me injured. And the second time when my sons car was so badly damaged in a hit an run collision that its been written off and he’s now been left without a car.
On the first occasion when the police eventually turned up (two and a half hours later) it was two specials, I showed them my injuries and identified the offenders to them. The offenders were no more than 15 feet from where they were stood and could be seen clearly and one was even urinating against the officers police vehicle whilst the officers watched. Did they arrest them? No they didn’t, even though several clearly defined offences had been committed.
Regarding the hit and run did they turn up, not a chance, I have traced the vehicle for them. It and its driver resides 300 yards from my home, I saw it drive past the very next day complete with corresponding accident damage and I immediately informed GMP. Have they done anything, No they haven’t.
Going by what this chap has been convicted of, it appears you have to lie through your teeth to get any kind of reaction out of GMP. I’d hoped that I would never of had to say this but, ‘GMP what a joke’.

Steve an alternative view

Wow Steve. An alternative view of GMP. Why does it always take somebody to get screwed personally before they can bring themselves to believe what the rest of us have been saying all along?

Salford Rat, you opinions regarding GMP are all to well published on here to the relish of the MEN. However, whereas you and so many others here indiscriminately criticize GMP at every available opportunity I prefer to base my opinions on evidence rather than a general dislike of an organisation.
My statement GMP what a joke referred to specifics ie the reported hoax caller and the two unfortunate incidents I experienced. I am sure that there are many within GMP who do a superb job in difficult circumstances and I am also sure that we the public of Manchester would be in dire straights if it were not for the presence of GMP. And I’m equally sure that you would disagree with both those statements simply because you always do when it comes to an opportunity to have a go at the police.

no offence, but 2k is not the actual cost is it. that will be at least the fuel cost of the helicopter , i suspect without anything for wages of the police. it also assumes all the equipment was already there.
1 million might be insance , but that probably equates to the yearly costs of all those departments split and probably what they'd charge any business if they wanted to rent them...

Steve an alternative view, - One of my very best friends is a cop who was pensioned off after getting a severe beating whilst actually doing his job. So I have no axe to grind against officers per se, many of whom do indeed do a good job under difficult circumstances. However, I feel I am right to have an issue with an organisation I help to pay for which does not provide the standard of service we all expect. As your experience clearly shows. I have an issue with post code policing i.e. a good service in sleepy rich neighbourhoods and a crap one in places like central salford where it is needed. I also have an issue with an organisation with so much power that polices itself and therefore leaves all of us at risk. When police lock up the wrong guy knowingly because of public pressure (stephan kiszko for e.g.) and leave the real killer wandering amongst us to maybe do the same to my daughter or son, I have an issue. Problem is it happens all too often. I am looking at a slightly bigger picture than your car getting a bump.

Salfordrat how predictable, police haters always have a friend who is/was a cop just like racists always have a best friend who’s of ethnic origin.
I always find it interesting that those who claim to view the bigger picture never do anything about what they claim is wrong. Its one thing venting your poison here but just exactly what are you personally doing about this so called poor police service. Are you standing as an MP so you can push forward any reform of the service? Do you sit on the police authority so you may guide the police with your righteous opinions? I doubt it on any level. I pointed out that I was dissatisfied with the service I had received not that I believed the who of the police service was useless.
With your insight into the service provided in different areas maybe you could enlighten all of us who cannot see, just exactly how you know this? On what do you base this belief? Come on Salfordrat show us why we are all so wrong and you are so factually right.
