Ex-mayor sentenced over death

Shan Alexander

A FORMER mayor has been sentenced to 50 hours' community service for causing the death of a passenger in a car she was driving.

Coun Shan Alexander, 66, who was appointed mayor of Stockport in 2005, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Mallory Perry, 66, by driving without due care and attention.

She had been driving from Stockport to Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire, in a convoy to attend a charity event for blind and partially-sighted people organised by the Rotary Club.

The court heard Coun Alexander, of Crown Street, Hawk Green, suffered a ‘momentary error of judgment’.

She will continue to serve as a Lib Dem councillor in Marple South. She did not comment after the sentencing.

Anybody else wouldn't have got off with such a light sentence, for a start they would have lost their license for six months or more and therefore in some cases most likely, their job plus a fine and / or prison sentence.

Obviously the charge for this councellor was a lesser one, but surely if someone dies as a result of someone else not providing adequate care and attention on the road, (attention being the operative word), that should automatically be classed as death from dangerous driving, shouldn't it?

Mad Welsh Scotsman,

The answer to your question is no.

smoebody causing death whilst driving without due care should be subject to a prison sentence of up to life imprisonment. It should always be treated as Manslaughter or Murder where the driver is at fault. Or is a life so worthless if they happened to be killed by a driver?

Unfortunately the report fails to explain what the court understood ‘a momentary error of judgement’ to mean. An explanation of how the accident occurred may have helped the readers to understand what at first appears to be a light sentence.
MEN have in my opinion should have reported more details of what happened. RIP Mallory Perry.

A former Mayor and magistrate (still current or suspended ?) being dealt with by "magistrates" - this is British justice! A pathetic sentence - 50 hours! What is the maximum for an offence such as this (for the loss of a life) - a long way off 50 hours, I bet. But - she is part of the powerful, privileged, protected, local "expenses" gathering minority. Place her as an Adswood resident, living on benefits and I bet a custodial sentence would have been imposed. I despair!

She shouldn´t be allowed behind a wheel ever again. Her momentary "lapse" cost an innocent person their life. I wonder how many "lapses" she´s had whilst working as a magistrate? I´ll bet she would have locked someone else up up for the same offense. Little Britain.
