Shopkeeper tackles 'idiotic criminals' - CCTV

A TEENAGER beaten to the ground by a shopkeeper he threatened has been described by cops as one of the region's 'most idiotic criminals'.

The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named, walked into a shop on Queensway in October this year and tried to buy booze.

When the shopkeeper refused, the youth pulled out an imitation handgun and aimed it at the man.

A companion of the teenager tried to remonstrate with his friend, but while this was happening the shopkeeper dashed from behind his counter and floored the gunman with a baseball bat.

Patrol officers found the gunman slumped on the floor when they arrived.

Yesterday, a judge at Bolton Crown Court sentenced the boy to an eight-month detention and training order after the youth admitted possessing of firearm, possession of class A drugs and handling stolen goods charge.

Det Con Ben Harris: "While this boy is one of Rochdale's most idiotic criminals, he committed a very serious offence, which has been reflected in the sentence.

"The victim was shaken up and was within his right to defend himself the way he did.”

excellent, this shop keeper deserves a medal. in fact give him a reward to. these idiots are ruining our society and we need more people like this shopkeeper that will stand up to these types of thugs. in fact we should have a shopkeeper amnesty let them beat the hell out of anybody who trys anything of this nature.

8 month detention and training order,what a laugh,what is this supposed to do,lets lock him up for a couple of month's tell him how he "should" behave and send him home to do it again,the law in this country is pathetic,well done to the shopkeeper I'd like to think I would do the same,though I'm not sure but,there are many people in this country who have had enough of these thugs doing what they want and getting away with it,putting them away is no deterent,they have all they want in prisons and young offenders,they are off the streets for a few months they get visits from friends and family,its no hardship to them to lose thier freedom for its just a holiday for them,we need tougher sentences but then your human rights nutters come along and "works with them" and suddenly they are reformed,what a load of rubbish.

who are you kidding Det con Harris (Detective??!!!), do you really think a paltry 8 month youth detention sentence will send a serious message to wannabee gun thugs!
This thug should have been jailed for a minimum of 5 years as the current government promised us years ago `anyone found in possession of a gun should expect a 5 year minimum jail term`

Well done to the shop keeper for protecting himself, BUT 8 MONTHS HELLO JUDGE, get in to the real world, 8 years minimum yes, WHAT IF THE GUN WAS REAL, the goverment of this country want waken up to what the real world is like, the sentences that have been handed out recently are unbelievable, or CRAP, the hole judicial system is in need of a total KICK UP THE BACKSIDE.

I don't condone violence, but at times it's needed to counteract the same thing. This shopkeeper should be awarded a medal. What right has anyone to enter a legitimate business and try to exert their will on the owner by any means? Absolutely none, and their own rights should stop right there.

But beating his head with that bat will not cause any noticeable brain damage with these types.

Hmm,maybe an assault charge and compensation claim coming. Poor baby, he got hurt by a nasty shop keeper, and after all he only had a toy gun. A***ole, 8 months is hardly commensurate with his crime, and certainly not a deterent. Same over here though.

Anglosaxon; why do you assume he is from a council estate,there are a lot of incidents like this where the person has come from a "good area,with wealthy parents" who were just bored,it doesn't matter where they are from they are still getting away with these things, Marcus, it doesn't matter if the gun was real or not,the shopkeeper doesn't know that does he,I have been on the recieving end of a thug with a gun and its very scary,I didn't know if it was real or not,this man deserves a medal,we should all be able to protect our selves/homes without fear of being prosecuted for hurting the little buggers the law is a disgrace in this country,and is geared toward the victims not the thugs
