WORK to restore a Victorian park to its former glory has started.
The first phase of the £4.3m project at Queens Park, Bolton, will include a £500,000 restoration of the historic Dobson Bridge.
The iron bridge was built in 1878, 12 years after the park opened to improve pedestrian links to the town centre. It has been closed for several years as it was structurally unsafe but is now set to reopen in spring 2010.
A new community pavilion, cafe and children's play area will also be included in the project, and the Grade II-listed lodge at the park's sunken gardens will be refurbished.
Coun Sufrana Bashir-Ismail said: "Dobson Bridge is an essential part of Queens Park and an important link between the park and the town centre. This will restore a valuable piece of heritage to its original splendour."
