HUNDREDS of viewers in Manchester were left watching television from Wales, the Midlands and London following the digital switchover.
Around 250 people contacted a special helpline to complain that yesterday's digital switchover had left them watching the wrong regional channels.
Instead of tuning in to Granada and North West Tonight, viewers were left watching Central Tonight and welsh-lan guage soap Pobol Y Cwm.
Problems arose for Freeview customers after they retuned their sets following the digital switchover and were left receiving signals from transmitters outside the North West broadcasting programming from Wales and the Midlands.
Virgin Media customers were also affected as the company broadcast programmes from BBC London rather than the North West.
Joe Smithies from Digital UK said: "Our engineers have turned off the analogue signals at 70 transmitters and boosted the digital signal from these sites.
"This means that almost everyone will now be able to receive digital television.
"It also means that some viewers living close to the border of the region may now be receiving a signal from a different transmitter which is broadcasting a different region's programming."
He added that viewers can alter the settings on their Freeview box or television to ensure they receive a signal from the transmitter in their region, allowing them to watch programmes from the North West.
A spokesman for Virgin Media said the company had opted to suspend BBC broadcasts from the North West and replace them with those from London during the digital switchover.
They added that viewers should resume watching BBC programming from the North West today.

Well, Sheikh - there are a few reasons to go digital. More capacity/channels available, extra options via 'the red button' and the ability to transmit in High Def. The analogue signal could not handle all that.
ohhhh - it also means that the analogue bandwidth not now being used for TV can be sold off to mobile phone companies or anybody else who will pay the millions to use it.

Have managed to talk to very pleasant people on the help line. The latest is leave it for a while (few days?) as the signal in our area, M7,is "weak" today.

Always wondered why stand alone Freeview boxes do this - I have a 4/5 year old 32" CRT TV with built-in freeview and I can turn this tv completely off either on the front of the tv or on the wall and the Digital channels are still there straight away when turned back on.
We are all advised to save power but everything these days does not have a proper OFF switch.. Plasma/LCD TV's, DVD recorders, Freeview/Sky Boxes etc - Switching off at the walls loses most of the settings for these.

so, can anyone advise once the analogue service is withdrawn, how we will be able to judge if our aerials are correctly alligned so that we can use these freeview boxes without missing channels or experiencing 'blocking'or 'pulling'...

I do have Sky, I have freeview in the bedroom and kitchen..... there is no way I am paying Sky a penny to have multi-room!.... I also have some video senders and receivers, so I can transmit Sky to my other TV's when needed.
I agree that Digital gives people more choice, but many people, especially the older population, are more than happy with 5 channels.... I know some who would still be happy with BBC1 and ITV in colour with BBC2 still transmitted in black and white!!!.... Some of these channels on Freeview, as with Sky, are an absolute joke!

If you are having trouble with your tv just give it a bit of a slap on the side or the top. That usually works. If it doesn't you are not bashing it correctly.
