PEOPLE in Greater Manchester waltzed into the digital era as the first phase of the TV switchover began.
Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly unveiled a spectacular light-and-sound show as three million homes across the north west prepared for one of the biggest changes in television history.
Engineers made the switchover at the Winter Hill transmitter, near Bolton, by turning off the BBC2 analogue signal in the early hours.
And Tess, from Stockport, helped put a bit of sparkle into the big event with the show last night at Urbis in Manchester.
It featured more than 100 pieces of film, including the first televised recording, and finished by turning the building pink.
Tess said: "After switchover, TV in the north west will be strictly digital.
"It's great news because it means more channels and more choice for everyone.
"Whatever your favourite show, make sure you're ready for digital so you can keep watching."
The remaining analogue channels - BBC1, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five - will be switched off on December 2.
People must ensure their TVs are capable of receiving a digital signal to continue receiving channels.
Jo Waters, Regional Manager for Digital UK, said: "Almost half a million viewers in the north west will be able to get digital TV through their aerial for the first time today.
"But even if you've had Freeview for a while, remember to retune your TVs and boxes when the signal comes back on."
