A mother of six was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting concealing “a mini encyclopaedia of weapons making” in the sleeve of her burkha.
Houria Chahed Chentouf, 41, from Longsight, Manchester, pleaded guilty to two offences of possessing documents likely to be useful for a terrorist.
But she walked free from Manchester Crown Court after serving her time on remand following her arrest.
The court heard the Moroccan accidentally dropped a pen drive containing terror-related documents while she was being interviewed by officers at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport on October 16 last year.
It had been tied to the inner sleeve of her burkha, but fell out as she reached down to scratch her leg, prosecutor Simon Denison told the court.
Chentouf was released but arrested the following day at a house she was renting in Reynell Road, Longsight, Manchester.
Weapons
She was charged under the Terrorism Act 2000 with possessing an article which gave rise to suspicions that “the possession was for a purpose connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism”.
The computer memory stick contained more than 7,000 files, including an explosives manual for the “Brothers of the Mujahadeen”.
It was described by police as “a mini encyclopedia of weapons making”.
Judge Michael Henshell
"[Chentouf] developed an obsessive interest in Jihad and the more extreme forms of Islam"
Another document contained information about the military use of electronics, the court heard.
Officers said the documents, some of which ran to 900 pages, would have been enough to fill two floors of the Marks & Spencer store in Manchester.
Martyrdom
Evidence was also uncovered from internet chatroom sites which indicated her support for those seeking martyrdom.
Judge Michael Henshell told the defendant she had “developed an obsessive interest in Jihad and the more extreme forms of Islam”.
“Offences of this sort must be sentenced to immediate custody to deter others from behaving as you have,” he said.
A “huge amount” of material was found on the pen drive but he told her there was “no evidence you intended to pass it on to anybody”.
“The Crown accept there was no intention of putting it into practical use,” he said.
The court heard that Chentouf suffers from a mental illness, triggered by the death of a family member, and has previously self- harmed.
Her behaviour may have been affected by this and her culpability was at the lower end of the scale for this offence, the judge added.
Chentouf, wearing a full burkha, did not react to the sentencing.

We have more than enough mental health sufferers failing to be provided for in this country, and don't need any more.
I take it this woman's photograph will not be appearing in the MEN's 'Wall of Shame', as I daresay she is so devout she will be veiled - no?

People are getting totally fed up with stories like these and people dont fear the thought of being branded a racist anymore.Remember when these groups used to use their colour as a defence then people ignored them and now they use the word racist rather than colour prejudice .maybe the new word of mental illness will start to play a role in their defence...?????

The reason these Islamic Extremists painfully force themselves to live amongst the Infidels and suffer Western Freedoms, enjoying life in a relatively peaceful and tolerant society with the benefits of a decent health system, alcohol, state education system and the like is not because they are hypocrits......
but they are mentally ill.

A decade or three in a grim prison or a secure mental hospital is what most sane people would want for her.
Let's hope she goes back to Holland. For health and safety reasons I don't want a mentally ill jihadist at liberty in Manchester. And if she is going to use her children as bombs then hopefully the social services won't let her anywhere near them, although you never know given their slavish adherence to political correctness.

Of all the arguments you could have put forward, that must be the weakest. It was hidden in the sleeve and sleeves are not unique to burkas.

Hence the sentence. I wonder how many people have downloaded the Anarchist's Cookbook - and not been prosecuted. Perspective people.

I can, because I find the idea of banning items of clothing to be ridiculous. I don't particularly like burkas, as I like to be able to see somebody's face when I'm talking to them, but I don't see that as any justification for banning them.

Really? I suspect those nations that have been on the recieving end of us being peaceful (ad lets be honest that is probably all of them) may differ.

Why just Burkhas? a memory stick is small enough to be hidden in virtually any item of clothing?

I hope people realise that not all people who wear Burkhas are terrorists and professional idiots. I'd claim 98% are really nice people, and proud of who they are and where they live. However it is people such as Chentouf who are trying their best to ruin the reputation of all the women who wear the Burkha, and disrepute the religion of Islam.
I'd argue it is poor immigration control that has led to this situation. Some background checks should have been done, and maybe something as simple as annual interviews to assess the benefit an immigrant is bringing to society. There are always influences and mental issues regarding these terrorists, such as the July 07 bombers, they were British but had a large foreign influence.
Also this woman is small fish, could there not have been a more thourough investigation to identify some of her associates, who are probably walking the streets of Longsight. She was at an airport with a concealed flash drive, it was obviously important to her, where was she taking it? what was the information being used for? I think we are only being told half the story here, or there has not been a reasonable investigation into this.
She should be excluded from the Uk, sorry,no the EU, no make it the World. There is no room for Terrorists in the world, lifes too short and precious.
