Staged: All the landing drama

THE D-Day anniversary is to be marked with a performance inspired by those who lived through the Normandy landings.

The Imperial War Museum has commissioned the drama, called D-Day Stories, based on the experiences of veterans and civilians from the Second World War.

Six people were interviewed about their memories and for the script. Actors from the Royal Exchange's adult theatre group play the veterans and it will be performed in the main exhibition hall at the Imperial War Museum.

Philip Dent, a retired Stockport teacher, who brings to life the memories of RAF veteran Gerry Mitchell, said: "It was very interesting to hear Gerry's stories. His experiences are fascinating."

The piece was compiled by the Royal Exchange's education officer Richard Hall, who said: "We wanted to commemorate D-Day and I had the idea of creating the piece from the experiences of people who lived through it."

Also featured in the drama is Iris Creamer, 82, from Levenshulme, who worked at an aviation factory during the war.

She said: "Everyone was expecting a big push but you didn't really hear much about it. Then it was announced that it had taken place and was successful. It was a wonderful feeling. It felt like the war was ending."

The drama will be performed on June 3, 4 and 6.
