Asda van stuck after sat-nav wrong turn

The van was taking shopping to a farm in Rossendale from the Asda store in Pilsworth, Bury when the driver took a wrong turn.

A SUPERMARKET van got stuck on a narrow footpath when the driver took a wrong turn while following his sat-nav.

The van was taking shopping to a farm in Rossendale from the Asda store in Pilsworth, Bury. The RAC were called out and the vehicle was freed after an hour.

Bikers and walkers had their route blocked on the path off Hardsough Lane, Edenfield.

David Bissett, 32, said: "I was amazed it had got down so far and I wondered how it was going to get back out."

An Asda spokeswoman said: "Unfortunately one of our home shopping vans took a wrong turn and got into a bit of a pickle.

"Thankfully the RAC was quick to come to the driver's rescue so it wasn't long before our intended customers received their weekly shop."

He should be done for driving without due care and attention, and he or ASDA should pay for the damage caused to the path.

I know sat navs can go wrong sometimes but a bit of common sense would tell anyone that it was not the right way.

Where did this "NUMPTY" get his driving licence, the Grattan Catalogue???
Obviously not watching the road and definitely does not know the width of his vehicle.

Some sat-navs have settings for walking and cycling routes. Bet this 'driver' used the wrong setting.

sat navs only go wrong when they are not updated, they are like all types of computer they need to be updated at least 2 times a year, now ASDA, you have the programs and tools in store, so I am sure you can update them for the drivers

Your having a laugh, vans can't make a wrong turn, drivers do that, please do use sat nav, but give the drivers A to Zs for when it gets tight (get it tight------suit yourself).

The company I work for has taken all sat navs from their vehicle due to too many errors.We have incidents of roads and streets being renamed and worst of all incorrect postcodes.Mind you having said that most maps on sat nave and printed use tha same supplier and can also be wrong.

It doesn't actually say that the sat-nav sent him down the footpath, the article states "the driver took a wrong turn" - when I went to school, albeit many years ago now, that meant that the driver made the mistake, not the sat-nav. However, grammatical niceties apart, I do sincerely hope that action is being taken against the numpty who quite obviously wasn't paying attention to the road - or indeed lack of !

As a driver who covers 60,000 miles per year, all over the uk, i personally think that sat-nav's are for brain dead idiots who couldn't find there ass if they sat on both hands. Every day i see these morons with their little screens sat directly in their line of site, blocking their view of the REAL road, whilst following the on-screen display as if playing Gran Tourismo. I do see their benifit when trying to find a specific street in a town or city that you are unfamiliar with, but why when travelling on motorways and major A roads do you need a computer telling you where to go? That is what road signs are for. Also in recent weeks, i have had to wait whilst HGV drivers have had to perform difficult manouvres to turn around because instead of reading road signs, that clearly state that the road is unsuitable for such vehicles, they blindly follow Tom-Tom. Map reading and route planning should be part of the driving test.

Acid, Chadderton, I fully agree with Lee Montgomery - satnavs are an aid to drivers, not brain replacements as an awsul lot of drivers seem to think they are.

So you agree that ALL sat-nav users are 'brain-dead idiots' and 'morons'? Even the ones who use them correctly and avoid any mistakes that the software may include? I've noticed that there are plenty of police cars with sat-navs fitted nowadays so the police must fall into Lee Montgomery's generalisation. Do you still agree entirely with his views?

Common sense would have said its not suitable for vehicles. Was he that stupid not to phone and ask where the person lived? or phone the depot and say he was lost.
