A CASHIER was threatened with a kitchen knife when a robber burst into a betting shop. She was unhurt, but the thug escaped with cash from the till after he jumped over the counter.

It happened at Coral Racing on Orrell Road, Wigan, at 7.45pm on Thursday.

Police trying to trace the man say the woman was left badly shaken by the ordeal.

Det Con Kath Andrews said: “This man armed himself with a dangerous weapon and terrified the woman working in the shop.

“I would urge anyone that may know who is responsible for this robbery to call police so we can make sure no one else falls victim to his greed.”

The man was white, 6ft to 6ft 2in, slim and in his mid to late 20s. He was wearing a black hooded top and black gloves.

I can't believe that after all the recent raids on bookies someone was able to jump over what I can pnly assume from the story was an open counter. I would hope that staff at any bookies, especially a national chain, whould have screened protection for their staff. If it is the case that the counter was open I would like to see the lady's employer prosecuted for neglect in their duty of care for their staff.

in the 70's &80's most betting shops were fitted with bandit screens because of the rise in hold-ups. banks were too difficult as they had adopted the bandit glass because of all the times they had been robbed so the crooks went for the next best thing - the bookies. unfortunately the bosses and people who have never worked in betting shops forget about these traumatic events and come up with daft ideas about boosting productivity, or rather profitability, ' I know let's make it more punter friendly and get rid of the horrible barrier between staff and clients' good idea let's have another drink.
