Jail for sex shame headteacher

THE former headteacher of a private school in Greater Manchester has been jailed for an affair with an underage girl.

Adam Wayne Evans, 37, whose wife has just given birth, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for a string of sex offences against the girl.

Evans was dismissed as head of Acorns School in Marple after being arrested last year when his victim told police.

The victim was not a pupil at the school. The offences date back to the 2002 and were committed in another part of the country.

Mold Crown Court heard how he took advantage of the vulnerable teenager and the pair began a year-long affair.

Prosecutor Kim Halsall said Evans had encouraged the affair, exchanging flirtatious texts and promising the girl they would be together when she was old enough.

But he jilted her shortly before her birthday, becoming hostile and ignoring her calls.

Evans was appointed head of Acorns School, a small boarding school for pupils with autism or emotional problems, two years ago. But he was ordered to leave after police received a complaint about the affair with the girl in August last year.

Twice-married Evans, of Granston Court, Connah's Quay, Deeside, admitted a series of offences - including indecent assault and inciting an under-aged child to commit gross indecency. A charge of unlawful intercourse with the girl, which he denied, was allowed to remain on file.

Judge John Rogers QC said jail was the only option for him.

Evans was also banned from working with children and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

David Temkin, defending, said Evans, was genuinely sorry for what had happened. "Of course this is the end of his teaching career, his passion," he said.

18 paltry months. Should of been 18 years. Stories like teachers abusing children is getting all too common in the news these days. Hope this piece of filth gets a good hiding inside. I cannot imagine the damage it has inflicted on the poor child- but here is hoping that she will get through it in the end of which is a painstaking process.

Why does the story not give the age of the girl when the offences were committed??

It all happened 7 years ago, whilst that is not an excuse, why has it taken so long for the girl to complain?

Very selective reporting.

Many cases of sexual abuse are not reported until years later,as seen in news stories every day.Most adults dont easily talk about sexual matters,let alone children who may have been abused by some vile adult.Who would want everyone to know?My own abuser was caught and in the papers when I was in my 20,s.I was mortified,that even though I may not have told anyone,some may have guessed.I have still never told anyone the details.The lack of understanding,or denial in society in general is what makes people keep quiet.The younger generation being better educated in these matters and more outspoken are speaking up for those of us to whom it STILL feels like a dirty secret.

A lot of people complain about school kids having too many rights and no responsibility, this case highlights that these rights are just and good. In the past how many teachers got away with this when schools had corporal punishment to keep the vunerable quiet as Angie 33 points out scaring lasts a lifetime. Todays kids do have an escape route at the outset, how many teachers went into teaching for other reasons, this brings my profession intro disrepute, hopefully today there are less of these predators working in the education system but we still have to be vigilant.

nemesis9 , manchester: You are right. I am a sad being. Sad of all the abuse our children endure at the hands of filthy scum and the fact that the courts do not impose the stiff sentences that we need to protect our children. What makes me more sad is the fact by law we have to send our children to school where as all the cases reported in the press that some teachers choose to abuse our kids in one way or another. It is getting a sad case scenario that parents are going to fear what or who is teaching them. Fort this reason: Yes I am sad..... but not as sad as yourself for your attempt to defend them.
