Brother of first Moors victim laid to rest

THE funeral of the brother of Moors Murder victim Pauline Reade took place in Manchester today.

Paul Reade died of a brain tumour aged 56 last week. He suffered a stroke four years ago and spent the last months of his life confined to a wheelchair.

Family and friends were at the service at St Brigid's Roman Catholic Church, at Grey Mare Lane, in Gorton.

Paul's body was then taken to Gorton cemetery, where his sister Pauline - first victim of depraved murderers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady - and their mother Joan have been laid to rest.

Winnie Johnson, whose son, Keith Bennett, was also killed by the Moors Murderers when he was 12 years old, became close to the Reade family over the years and attended the funeral.

"It's a very sad day," she said, "but at least now Paul will be at rest. I knew Paul fairly well and was very close to his mum, Joan.

"We stuck to each other like glue, it was our way of trying to get through what happened. Joan was thankful that Pauline's body was found before she passed away and I'm sure Paul felt the same."

Pauline was 16 when she vanished on July 12, 1963, on her way to a disco near her home in Gorton.

It was not until 1987 that her body was found in a shallow grave on Saddleworth Moor, after Hindley and Brady confessed to the killing from jail.

Hindley died from a chest infection in custody in November 2002 - two weeks after suffering a heart attack.

She was jailed for life in 1966 with Brady for the murders of 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans, 17.

Brady was also convicted of murdering 12-year-old John Kilbride, while Hindley was an accessory. In 1987, the pair also confessed to killing Pauline and Keith Bennett.

I am so sorry to hear Paul Read suffered a stroke four years ago, and and died of a brain tumour, this poor man has been has been living dead since the horrific death of his dear sister, along with his Mother and his family and friends, and people who did not know this family, or the families of the Brady/Hindley victims, I along with millions of people across the world still remeber these horific murders as though it was yesterday, and what is so disgusting and stressful is the way these monsters have been treated they are with dignity and respect while the victims families are ignored, I would just like to offer my sincere condolences to Paul's family.
I would also like to say to Mrs. Bennet the people of Manchester have not forgot your beloved Son has never been found, our sypmathies go to you and your family, especially at times like this.

Sincerely

F.Irwin
