NEIGHBOURS formed a human blockade to stop lorries using their road as a rat run.
They barricaded Debdale Lane, Gorton, for 45 minutes during the morning rush hour and turned back heavy goods vehicles as police looked on. Dozens of lorries cut through the road every day, say neighbours.
It is thought HGV drivers ignore signs warning them not to use the road because they are following their sat nav systems.
"We've had enough," said Rose Cusack, from Debdale and Woodland residents' association.
"This is really dangerous. The kids can't play out. The vibrations from the lorries are damaging the road and making our houses shake and we've had wing mirrors broken off our cars.
"We needed to do this to make our point and the police have been very supportive."
The residents' association want the council to narrow the road so lorries can't get through.
Gorton South councillor Simon Ashley, leader of the Liberal Democrats at Manchester council, joined the protest and said the campaign had his `full support'. He said: "The council have put signs up, but drivers are not listening.
"In the 45 minutes we were there about six heavy goods vehicles indicated to go down the road.
"When they saw us, they thought better of it, but we can't stand there all day.
"It needs to stop, so I hope that this protest will force the council to take action."
The council promised to look again at the problems in Debdale Lane.
Coun Chris Barber, head of highways services, said: "We will look into the residents' concerns regarding this issue."
The police said the protests had not caused major disruption. A spokesman said: "It was a peaceful protest by about 20 people."

That's a good attitude Bob, what if it was your street? I suppose you'd do everything by the book and accept defeat if the council turned you down.

More likely the HGV drivers should be arrested for ignoring signs as per the third paragraph of this article.

The signs are not regulatory (which are circular)as you imply and as such cannot be enforced, nor are they warning signs (which are triangluar)as implied by the article. These signs are information signs.

Most of them are used by drivers not wanting to wait in traffic, and that is because the highways and the city council do not listen to any one but themselves about their jobs.
so where is the answer to help all these rat runs......

Perhaps Council Employee, you should go here... www.ukmotorists.com/Regulatory_signs.asp#start and learn about road signs. You'll find most motorists who have genuinely passed their test are fully aware of road sign usage, you clearly haven't.

Blimey! Ok Lee. I forgot to use the word "usually" in front of circular. Stop signs or give way signs are not circular either. No need to jump down my throat
I was referencing the "Traffic Signs Regulations and Genearal Directions 2002" There are very few exceptions to this rule and a good rule of thumb for the many motorists who haven't got a clue what any road signs mean. If its round- its an order (red for don't do it, blue for do it).

All I was pointing out was that you cannot prosecute drivers for ignoring an information sign and as everyone knows a blue rectangular sign is an information sign.

Yes, there are Streets which lead onto it and these are always full of double parked cars.
I had an Office on Reddish Lane, only 100 yards away, and would not have thought that it would have been worth taking this 'short cut' saving only a few yards and making it hard to get out onto Reddish Lane.
So far as I am concerned this is a case of the chimney...........
