In what way is forcing the country into greater debt in order to sell cars that people don't particularly need a good idea?
A Salfordian: "We need independent candidates with fresh ideas and a real willingness to sort things out not career politicians looking to get rich"
Are you going to stand then?

Germany and France protect their industries we don't why. Even Prudence Brown should have worked this out when he came in power. No point spouting "British jobs for British workers" if you don't back it up. So the other real problem is how in the next few years the direction of this country England needs a settled base for production, education and power. Otherwise we as this generation might as well sign lock stock and barrel to Euroland and accept the deals brokered on our behalf.
Black Flag (28/09/2009 at 17:01)
The idea that governments can protect their industries is nonsensical. They can't do anything to protect one industry without harming another in the process. That's why people protested against the Corn Laws at Peterloo; the laws did a great job of protecting British agriculture, but they crippled manufacturing areas like Manchester.
The other problem that people who call on us to "Buy British" have is defining what that slogan actually means. Should I buy a Dyson vacuum, produced by a British owned company, but manufactured in Malaysia, or should I buy a Nissan car, produced by a Japanese owned company but manufactured in Sunderland? Which of those goods is more British?

I would like to see us all creating coherent sentences in the future, but I won't be holding my breath.
Other than that, I just want the government to keep it's nose out. If British car manufacturing has problems, it's down to one fundamental issue - as a nation, we aren't very good at it. Propping an industry up is the last thing the government should be doing. Deadweight industries should be left to die out as quickly as possible so that others have the opportunity to flourish and we can focus on the things we are best at.

I would suspect that Bolton is under threat but maybe not Wigan from a change from Red to Blue (I think Rochdale is SDP).
What ever colour the 10 areas in M/cr become I think Brown is toast..
The stench of death is around him and new labour. Mandelson said he will work for the govt in power in any capacity after the next election so even he is hedging his bets, feathering his nest.
So it boils down to:
Brown - Captian Cadaver
Cameron - Eton Toff
Clegg - I've slept with 30 women so I understand women politics.
I think the traditional Labour voters will be reduced to 15%/20% and those who now hate "new labour" and all the Blair/Brown emptyness will now vote SDLP as a "protest" vote. A bit like traditional Man Utd fans who now "love the team / hate the club" now support FC United or Bury or Altrincham but never City. Tories will win, Labour will be defeated badly but SDLP may hold the balance of power so there is no overall majority.
Prediction: Tory 45%
SDLP 25%
Lab 15%
Other 15%
What is a shame there is going to be very little positive voting going on.
