A COUPLE who have shared 50 happy years together celebrated their anniversary with a journey from the bus stop where they first met.
Peter Caswell and wife Delia met in 1959 when they stood at the bus queue on their way to Salford University.
The teenage students both took the number 26 bus from their home town, Leigh, to the campus.
Peter was studying a physics degree and Delia was taking a one-year domestic science course at Salford Technical College - later part of the university.
Despite seeing each other every day, the love-struck pair were too shy to speak. It was only after one of Delia's relatives recognised Peter from summer work at a local farm that the couple plucked up the courage to chat. Five years later they wed.
Speaking of their first meeting, Peter said: "It is significant because 50 years ago this week we got the 26 bus from Leigh and we stood at the same bus queue making eyes at each other but not actually speaking because we were too shy."
Marriage
Delia, who worked as a nurse until her marriage, said: "I had mentioned to my cousin about this guy at the bus stop.
"When she came with me she started waving at someone and it was the same boy. She introduced us.
"There were two men working on the farm as a summer job. They were both called Peter. She married big Peter and I married little Peter."
Peter worked in human resources. The couple, who have two children and three grandchildren, are now retired but active with clubs and charities.
They celebrated their anniversary with a lunch and guided tour of the university - as well as a bus ride.
Uni tour guide Vicky Hayhurst said: "A lot of graduates visit us and we were happy to help with Peter and Delia's request."
