NEIGHBOURS are being hailed as heroes after a woman trapped in a house fire leapt to safety onto the mattress they had dragged outside.

Fire crews were called to Roebuck Lane, Sale at 3am. When they arrived they found the blaze at a mid terraced property.

The female occupant, in her late 30s and profoundly deaf, had managed to drop from the first floor onto a mattress carried out by neighbours.

She was taken to hospital but her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A fire service spokesman paid tribute to those who had helped. He said: "Without their actions it could have been a lot worse for the woman."
