A HARROWING tape of a 999 call made by a carjacking victim as she pleaded for help while she was attacked with a baseball bat and machete has been released.

The woman is pleading for help as robbers kick their way into a bedroom she and her partner are trying to barricade themselves in.

The couple were asleep when they heard someone trying to break through the back door of their home in Plattbrook Close, Fallowfield.

They fled to a bedroom and tried to lean up against the bedroom door to block it.

The woman used the phone in her bedroom to call police and her frantic pleas for help can be heard on the tape plus the gang screaming for the car keys as they burst in.

After forcing open the door the masked men repeatedly hit the woman over the head with a baseball bat.

The robbers also hit the man in the face before stealing a set of car keys and driving off in the couple's VW Golf TDI.

The car was later found abandoned in the St George's area of Hulme.

The victims are a normal, hard-working couple, and these thugs brought shocking violence direct into their home
Det Sgt Scott Halsall,

The woman suffered two cuts to the head. One on the forehead required five stitches.

All the raiders wore dark clothing and balaclavas or face coverings.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and is currently being interviewed by officers.

Det Sgt Scott Halsall, of Longsight robbery unit, said: "Anyone listening to this 999 call will feel sick to the stomach - you can hear the terror in her voice.

"The victims are a normal, hard-working couple, and these thugs brought shocking violence direct into their home.

"The amount of terror and violence used was above and beyond what was necessary for them to steal the car. I hope that any of their associates listening to this audio realise the seriousness of the offence and do the right thing and call us."

Anyone with information about the raid before 6am on Monday is asked to call Longsight CID on 0161 856 1936 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
