POLICE in Greater Manchester have decided against using water cannons to quell riots. At a police authority meeting Deputy Chief Constable Simon Byrne said the tactic would not be employed by the force.
Senior GMP officers had been speaking to the Police Service of Northern Ireland as part of a fact-finding mission about the use of water to deal with problems involving large numbers of people, such as football riots.
The idea was discussed in documents dating back to November 2007 but was kept under wraps because it was feared people might think the tactic 'heavy handed'.
Issue
Responding to a question submitted to the police authority about the issue, Mr Byrne said: "There was some dialogue with Northern Ireland but there was no intention to train officers in the use of water cannon."
He said that 'as far as he was aware' the issue had not been looked into for two years, adding: "The water cannon is not an idea we are considering pursuing."
Water cannon are regarded as a symbol of oppression by some campaigners after they were turned on black people during the American civil rights movement in the 1960s.
Crowds
When the M.E.N revealed that GMP was in discussions with police in Northern Ireland, the head of the Greater Manchester Black and Asian Police Association, Charles Crichlow, criticised the move.
He described the idea of water cannon as 'grotesque' at a time when public confidence in the police was low. GMP has been examining new tactics for controlling large crowds since Rangers fans went on the rampage in Manchester city centre in May last year.
A number of officers were hurt when riots broke out after big screens showing the Uefa cup final with Zenit St Petersburg stopped working.

After seeing a man not even involved in a (peaceful) protest killed in London this year by the police who then blatantly tried to cover it up and blame other protesters it should make you wonder who we need to be protected from.
Well done GMP for a sensible decision.

This country is wayyyyyy too soft on criminals of whatever colour, gender, and crime committed. That is why we are in the mess that we are!

If they don't like the fact that they have to operate under the rule of law, they can always go and get a different job.

The timing of this, on the weeked of the Peterloo memorial is ironic, maybe if the proper equipment had been available then we would still be held to ransom, and forced to starve, by the big land owners with thier restrcitions on food imports under the old corn laws

Who are these scum? Are you talking about water cannon for rowdy revellers on a Friday night? Mass riots? How often do they happen? How much do you think one water cannon truck would cost? Just to sit about in a garage somewhere collecting dust.
You'd be one of the first on complaining about waste of taxpayers money. Perhaps you should engage your brain before typing.

Its far from clear from your post who you envisage these expense pieces of equipemnt being wheeled out of their garages to deal with?
its all very well to say, lets have these, so some police can pose alongside them for some nice pictures in the paper, and people can feel that they are "bieng tough" on something or other, but in what way will any citizen be made safer by spending our money in this way?

If you mean the local getting done over, this happens all over I suppose.

I wish I had your faith in ourleaders to determine who is protesting reasonably, and who rioting.
It was only months ago a man was pushed to the ground by police and later died, and 190 years since people demanding the removal of unjust bread taxes charged by sabre wielding cavlary; perhaps less has changed than we think, and the price of freedom is still that we must be prepared, and able to take to the streets and express our displeasure at our rulers
