Highway chiefs remove Hollinwood's Hollywood sign

The Hollywood-style Hollinwood sign by the M60 near Oldham has been removed by the Highways Agency

A SIGN that brought Hollywood glitz to Hollinwood has been removed - after it fell foul of the letter of the law.

The Manchester Evening News revealed on Tuesday that a recreation of the famous Los Angeles sign had appeared at the side of the M60 near Oldham.

But hours later the sign was removed by Highways Agency officials. Mystery still surrounds who was responsible for the mock up, which appeared on Monday on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 21 and 22.

Well this amazes me. The Highways are quick to remove this sign, so why on earth as they nto as quick in removing all the signs advertising kichens or the old trailors being parked in field advertising all sorts of services?

Pathetic. Anything that shows a bit of humour, imagination and creativity is stamped on by these petty-minded jobsworths. Hope it's a Banksy project and they've destroyed something worth hundreds of thousands.

Why do we need the overhead motorwway signs 'dont drink and drive' etc they should only be used for emergencys. Highwys agency, get a life.

How utterly utterly PATHETIC! There's not word's enough to describe these sad sorry devoid of humour gold rimmed caps. It can not be stated enough this country has lost all sense of...........?????? well everything? We can't even be allowed to smile :-( How utterly mindlessly sad are they? The country is sick!

I drove past this at the weekend and it made me smile. Guess it won't any more. However, I did think it was a bit dangerous in its positioning, on a straight stretch near a slip road, where you had to look sideways to see it. Maybe they could move it elsewhere? As we drove past I saw a Highways patrol vehicle parked on the hard shoulder and my wife said the she saw the occupants up by the sign having their photo taken with it. Maybe it was for 'evidence'...

Yeah! Spoilsports! Just think of the fun if this amateur sign had blown into the path of heavy fast-moving motorway traffic.......then you'd all have been saying "Punish these maniacs!" and "What are the Police doing about it?" A moment's thought is all it takes...........

So, no statement from the Highways Agency to explain what a hazard this sign was ? The person who made it had obviously gone to great lengths to do so. The HA should have checked it was well anchored and left it.

Perhaps these sad and pathetic jobsworths would like to explain how they swoop to remove an innocuous sign within hours but it took them over 5 years to repair the embankment collapse a little further up at Victoria Avenue East ?

I hope the unknown sign maker waits a while and puts another up but please don't report on it M.E.N and make it easy for the jobsworths at the Highways Agency.

Presumably it was removed because it was a distraction.

So when Salford Council allowed a shuttlecock on the Cadishead way roundabout, which is designed to give the impression of two people dancing as you drive past it (Obviously not watching the road), this is not a distraction.

I know it's different councils but it's always one rule for one and another for everyone else

I've seen cars at the top of motorway embankments with startled looking drivers being spoken to by the police. Thats ok it cheers me up. What I don't want to see is cars halfway up a motorway embankment impailed on scaffolding bars surrounded by firemen and ambulances as they attempt to play human kerplunk getting the driver out.

Has anyone else noticed the massive advertising board they have put up at Denton M67/M60 junction?

I guess that wasn't financially incentivized either...

Here's a thought, perhaps those trailers and adverts are on private land and the highways officials can't remove them. I'd also suggest they're less of a hazard too.

It could be worse look at manchester council paid millions for that B 0f the bang and they ended up pulling that down and it costs millions.I think oldham council should embrace these artistic bits of art.

Nope it's not you, these people are so all consumed with what their little informative super instructors in their field have taught them, they can not see further than their sad noses, so to speak. HUMOUR? HUH? WHAT'S THAT? Oh yeah it's that thing where you can smile and laugh occasionally, but was band way back in 1984 by the proletariat. Get it down quickly!!! Can't have people smiling, what would the world come to! Say it again PATHETIC dogs bodies. Nothing else to say about it really, EXCEPT SAD!
