VIEWERS in Manchester will be the first in Britain to receive Freeview High-Definition TV broadcasts - but the set-box boxes that receive the signal will not be widely available until months later.
The first HD broadcasts will be beamed via the Winter Hill transmitter on December 2, less than a month after the digital switchover for the Granada area on November 4.
But HD channels cannot be received on standard set-top boxes, so people who have already bought a box ready for the switchover will have to shell out again if they want HD.
To receive HD on Freeview viewers will have to buy new set-top boxes which are still in development and won't be widely available until 2010, as well as HD TVs.
The HD boxes are expected to be made available early next year.
'Inexcusable'
Media industry analyst Chris Goodall said: "It's daft and pretty inexcusable that they could fall into this kind of technological trap. But these kinds of things happen when you've got developing technology.
"A lot of the population already have set-top boxes which are not HD compatible.
"Those who don't already have them will have to buy a `first generation' box before being able to buy more advanced equipment. It's irritating, but not the end of the world."
Freeview spokeswoman Sara Jones said: "The HD compatible boxes are still in development and we expect a wide range to be on the market by early next year, clearly marked with the Freeview HD logo."
Freeview stressed there would be a limited supply of HD boxes in time for the switch-on in December.
ITV is the latest broadcaster to announce an HD channel on Freeview, along with the BBC and Channel 5.
The new ITV1 HD service will be launched alongside the digital switchover and will be available in Manchester in December - and to half of all homes in time for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

It's not irritating..! It's another money making scam...
"Still in development...!"
Why...? We have known about the digital switchover for a long time now, you'd think they would have sped up the development knowing hundreds of thousands of people will be possibly wanting one... I know it's a choice as to whether you buy one or not but it's a bit unfair as we will be without tv so will have no choice in buying a normal one and then forking out 2 months later if we want the benefits of hd...
And I know it's only £20 but £20 is £20...

Now, Freeview HD is not going to replace the existing freeview stuff, it's going to complement it. If you don't want it then you don't have to buy a new box. Standard freeview continues. Incidentally, for the near future the new boxes will be over £200 because they're more advanced.
Zimmerman's post is just weird: HDTVs were widespread 18 months ago and it would have been incredibly obvious that these were the things to buy if you wanted to be up-to-date. His/her betamax/VHS analogy is utterly wrong because freeview HD and freeview aren't competing and as for feeling he/she HAS to have freesat and freeview HD, well that would just be ignorant because they're virtually the same thing, just using different methods of transmission.

The very latest thing is 3D TV .But i wonder how many formats will there be? they sell all the formats toghether rather than build just one....its a never ending story.

HD is like an optional extra. You can still receive normal digtial TV though a normal box and you can still buy normal DVD's for Normal DVD players. If you want high definition, upgrade your equipment. If you dont, dont buy anything. Simples

The fact that Freeview HD boxes aren't available at launch is just a reflection of the fact we're one of the first regions to launch the technology. No-one is compelled to buy it - you would only if you're interested in improving your picture quality.

Fortunately I have a life and don't live in my bedroom surrounded by the latest gadgetry and get fed by having a pizza slid under a 2 inch slot sawn off the bottom of the door. I would have settled for 'HD is better'.

It is a waste of money but people seem to place as much status and pride in having shiny new TV equipment as they do with having a nice shiny car on the drive with ludicrous alloy wheels and a sat nav to show them the way to work and back every day.
