TWO women have been convicted of fiddling thousands of pounds from the benefits system - and they won't go to jail.
Sheila Smith, of Pollitt Close, West Gorton, was given a year's jail sentence suspended for 18 months after claiming more than £39,000 in income support, housing benefit and council tax benefit between March 2003 and February 2008.
Manchester Crown Court was told that she was paid the money because she had failed to tell the benefits office she was working.
In a similar, but unrelated hearing, Melanie Richards, of Priory Avenue, Chorlton, was convicted of fraudulently obtaining housing benefit, council tax benefit, income support and jobseeker's allowance totalling £10,829 between January 2006 and July 2008.
Richards, 31, had also failed to tell the benefits office that she was working and was, therefore, not entitled to have the money.
Both women pleaded guilty.
Richards was given a 40-hour community punishment order with an `activity requirement' and ordered to pay costs of £150.
Smith, 41, was also ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work.
Coun Bernard Priest, of Manchester council, said: "This woman has been stealing from the people of Manchester and I am pleased that council staff working together with colleagues from the Department for Work and Pensions have uncovered these thefts.
"The message is clear to these people: `We will find out and we will prosecute'."
City treasurer Richard Paver added: "The whole community suffers when individuals commit a crime of this nature.
"Not only does it reduce the money available to those with a genuine entitlement, but it also increases the burden on the council taxpayer."
Manchester has a free, confidential Benefit Fraud Hotline, which members of the public can use to report suspected benefit fraud. The number to call is 0800 783 9668.

I know what happened to a Civil Servant who typed something on a web-blog about her at work, but remind me ... what ever happened to Hazel Blears...?

Clearly, any right thinking person would have imposed an immediate custodial sentence and not just a few weeks. That is what is needed to stop this kind of thing from growing.
I am of the opinion that these cases were hardly worth the time, effort and expense to bring them to Court to wind up with these stupid sentences.

With your skills and experience? You might find it rewarding moving to the private sector.
Insurance claims are rocketing in the recession and you can expect to receive a more rewarding compensation package. Of course you will, however, have to offset more pay against your presumably former allegiance to working for a state run enterprise.

Thank you, am looking at that that the moment, am qualified as an Investigator so just seeing what is about at the moment, lot of roles mean relocating out of Manchester which I really don't want to do either. Its either that or a complete career change, but with a CV geered at the same thing it puts potential employers off.

It's very sad that people who have worked their lives and put into the system (like youself) get stung when they actually need it, when people such as those mentioned in this article can and get away with defrauding or even worse the ones who just can't be bothered (I don't mean the genuine ones out there) to work and go under certain guises of medical ailments that can not really be proven by a doctor.
Ms B - If you have not done so already, you may be entitled to Pension Credits and MAY still be entitled to something off your Council Tax!

I wish I was still working, but that's life. Good luck with your job hunting.
