A STUDENT from Manchester University has described how he escaped with his life after being gored in the leg during the running of the bulls at Spain's annual Pamplona festival.
Speaking from his bed at the Virgen del Camino Hospital, Alex Short, 20, told how he was separated from his friends and unable to flee.
"One of the bulls decided to go the wrong way and everyone was trying to get out of the way," he said.
"I saw people running the wrong way and realised that something was really wrong.
"But then I couldn't jump over the barrier fast enough and the bull gored me in my left leg and then flipped me and landed me on the ground.
Blacked out
"I hit my head and blacked out, but then I must have come round, because I managed to run to the side.
"A lad next to me grabbed the bull by its head, but he was gored by it too."
Alex, from Watford, who is studying geography at Manchester, was on holiday in Spain with six friends.
He had attended two bull runs in Pamplona already this week and was due to fly home to England from Bilbao.
Pumped
But he expects to be kept in hospital until Tuesday in case his wound - which he described as 'a horn-sized puncture' - becomes infected.
He said: "I can't believe what happened, and that the bull chose me over umpteen other people to gore. But it was all so fast and you're so pumped up with adrenalin.
"I didn't feel a thing - no pain whatsoever."
A Spanish man, Daniel Jimeno Romero, 27, from Madrid, was gored to death at the event. Eight others were injured.

Yeah. The bull cast his eye round the assembled gathering and thought: "I'll have him". Stay away from terrified animals sonny jim or you may not be so fortunate next time. Or find a hobby that's more humane.

They should switch roles and have these idiots run individually down a street packed full of bulls.

Now THAT would be worth watching - unlike this antiquated form of Iberian animal torture.

So nobody watches it then you muppet?
With any luck the bull is now on a roll and will cop for the Salford bullfighter 'hero' next. Good Luck to the bull.

Sorry but lets hope the wounds heal slowly & very painfully...the bull is dead and butchered by now, no second chance for him.

This festival has been around years and no doubt one day the do-gooders will ban it as they have everything else like smoking in my local. It's about time they kept their nose out of other poeples business. At the end of teh day we are talking about a bull, a dumb animal who relies on instinct. Better focus on why 390,000 innocent Iraqi civilians have been killed by us and America since we illegally invaded rather than on a few bulls.
Better too to focus on the fact the paddy fields cause 39% of the world global warming (UN figures) rather that sctaching my 4x4 and leafletting it telling me I am destroying the planet. Prats.
Next year I plan to go to Pamplona and dice with these bulls. It's a proper buzz and I'm up for it. If I had a horse I'd hunt foxes too just to stick two fingers up. I was in Thailand last week and a shop was selling shoes made of of skins that was crocodile and sting ray - very tempted. I went to a show where a mongoose fought a cobra - do that here and Mr Soft comes along and spoils your fun.
This country is in reverse.
