The soap will have a regular Thursday slot for the first time

CORONATION Street is on the move to avoid a clash with Manchester United.

The Rovers regulars will switch from Wednesday to Thursday nights as part of a shake-up of the ITV1 schedules.

ITV said it was the first time in Corrie's 49-year history that the soap has been given a regular home on a Thursday.

Coronation Street will move from its previous 7.30pm slot on a Wednesday to 8.30pm on Thursdays from July 23.

Emmerdale will also screen two separate episodes on Thursdays with its hour-long Tuesday episode consequently cut by 30 minutes.

New contract

The move reflects ITV's new contract for the Champions' League which means it will screen Man Utd matches and others on Wednesdays, instead of Tuesdays as before.

It will also make room for FA Cup replays and England internationals to be screened live on Wednesday evenings.

Salford-raised Corrie star Michelle Keegan, who plays Tina McIntyre, and Bolton-born Emmerdale actress Sammy Winward, who plays Katie Sugden, are among cast members urging viewers to make a date when the schedules change.

The switch also co-incides with the transfer of long-running police drama The Bill to a post-watershed 9pm start on Thursdays.

Corrie fans will still have the normal two episodes on both Mondays and Fridays, retaining a total of five each week.

An ITV spokesman said: "The volume of both soaps will remain the same, with 180 minutes of Emmerdale stripped across the week and 150 minutes of Coronation Street."

Gawd havent watched this or Eastenders for years. My sis is a corrie fanatic and the world stops whenever its on. I prefer to live my life without a programme controlling it! They are all boring anyway!!

If they cut it back to 2 eps a week I might start watching again, as it is I have no time for 5/6 eps a week so dont bother at all..

Of course everybody wants to watch football don't they and sod those who don't. Seems like I and many others are watching less and less on ITV and BBC these days no wonder they have had to cut jobs.

Surely the easiest way to avoid a clash of programming interests is to simply cancel the Wednesday Coronation street slot completely ;~) everyones a winner then.

Once again a TV programme has to be moved to show a match. Can you imagine the furore if a football match had to be moved for a tv programme.

Oh great there nothing much on the tv worth watching and then they go and put on MUFC and the likes! Totally boring to those of us who are not interested in football!
However I expect MUFC armchair supports with be very excited!

Thursday evening television is now going to be a complete write-off! Emmerdale is absolute rubbish with superannuated has-beens as 'actors' & Corrie is struggling for decent story lines nowadays. So why not scrap the lot?

ALl these people complaining that the football is taking the wednesday slot in front of corrie should be quiet. You get Coronation street 5 times a week whereas the football is only showed once every two weeks.

Won't miss Emmerdale as Obertan,United's new signing is the spit of Sam Dingle,the star of Emmerdale! I do wish they would leave The Bill alone though as it is the best serial drama on the box.Put it on ITV 2 on match nights!

Next year, Coronation Street fans will be coming to Manchester from Canada, Australia and New Zealand (amongst other places) during its 50th anniversary year but almost all of them agree that Corrie isn't as good as it once was because it is on far too often. Instead of quality, it has become lazy TV for the benefit of the advertisers and the entertainment value has been diluted. In the past 10 years I can't think of anybody on a patch with Ena Sharples, Elsie Tanner, Annie Walker, Hilda Ogden, Stan Ogden, Jack and Annie Walker, Len Fairclough, etc. ITV Bosses need to look at past Coronation Street and see how entertaining it was, and why it had 20 million viewers (multi channel TV has nothing to do with it, if something is good, people will still watch).

Moving to Thursday.....who cares.

When ITV get the U.E.F.A cup Games and Man City is on a Thursday it will be put back to Tuesdays!!!
