As to the fence idea for Canal St, it's not inkeeping with the area, and surely at £300,000 it is alot of money for when, only a few people fall in the canal, why can't there be life rings or ropes added to the canal instead? Or even still people realise it's not a good idea jumping into the canal.
Sad that someone has died though.

£300,000 for a fence is nothing considering the costs involved rescuing someone from the canal. There is always a response from the fire and rescue service with our boat, the ambulance service with their response vehicles and the police response, including the police underwater search team if tragically needed. All of this costs a fortune to mobilse everytime some idiot decides is it's a good idea to have a late night dip, plus they could be elsewhere especially now that we have a somewhat disappearing fire service both day and night. I say fence of the canal where it can be and provide throw lines and life rings along the length of all the waterways.Perhaps then we will have fewer tragic deaths.
Condolences to the family of the gentleman involved.

I Thought the council was fencing these canal sides off, after the last tradgedy the council said they were fencing it off, but apparently a load of idiots that drink in the Canal St area, has open a facebook site against fencing it off, how selfish are they, if was fenced off, the people that accidently slipped in would still be with us today..
MKL Would you like to see all curbs with a fence, and hazard warning on them too? Just incase someone inadvertantly trips over one.
Where does the big brother attitude stop etc etc etc.

dont worry, i believe the council's plan to spend 300,000 (at least) of our money, so people can be relieved of the need to be responsible for their own actions are currently awaiting planning persmission.
since the plan only covers canal st, they will presumably decide to spend millions more to make us "safe" for the full extent of the canal in the city

Too many people forget that water is dangerous and can kill as well as needing to drink it to survive.
Had this man entered the water on Canal Street, his body would have stayed in the immediate area due to the locks, so the Canal Street fence wouldn't have prevented this tradegy anyway.
Also, it always seems to be men that think a drunken dip in the canal/resi is a good idea, not that I know that this guy had alcohol in his system, but if so, he wouldn't be the first.
