WORLD-famous paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has pledged to support little Harley Slack who lost all his limbs to meningitis.
South African star Pistorius, nicknamed Blade Runner due to his carbon-fibre, prosthetic limbs, has been moved by four-year-old Harley's story.
He wants to speak to Harley's parents, Adam and Samantha, to share his own experiences of how he has coped with his disability.
Along with our sister paper the Stockport Express, the M.E.N. is backing an appeal by Harley's family, from Hazel Grove, to raise money to help create a better future for him with high quality prosthetic arms and legs.
Four-time paralympic games gold medallist Pistorius is also considering ways to raise money for the fund.
Support
The 22-year-old sprinter was born without fibula. Aged 11 months, both legs were amputated halfway between his knees and ankles. But he's become one of the highest profile sportsmen on the planet.
Pistorius, who competed at the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester, said: "When the Manchester Evening News told me about Harley, I was really moved.
"It's a traumatic time for Harley but also for his parents. I certainly hope I can get a chance to talk with them and give them any help and advice." Grateful Adam said: "We've been overwhelmed by the support.
"But it's really fantastic someone like Oscar should take an interest."
In less than two weeks, the fund has rocketed through the £100,000 barrier. Bookmaker Fred Done has sent a £5,000 cheque. He said: "I can't think of a better cause to give to. You just put yourself in his family's position. It was a great pleasure to do it."
