NIGHT time temperatures this week have been the warmest for the past 14 years, weathermen said.
The Met Office said the minimum temperatures in Manchester on Tuesday and Wednesday night reached a sweltering 20C.
The muggy conditions have dominated Manchester and the rest of the UK throughout the week.
A Met office spokesman said: "These temperatures will take some beating. The last time we saw temperatures like this at night was in July 1995 when it was 19.6C.
"These are the warmest night temperatures for about 14 years."
A "heat health" warning was issued by the Met Office during this week. The Department of Health said that the elderly and young children are most at risk from heat stroke in hot weather.
It advises staying out of the sun, avoiding strenuous activities and going out in the hottest part of the day, and drinking plenty of water.
Forecasters say by Friday the heat wave should start to dissipate, with temperatures heading back to normal levels over the weekend.
