Thug on Facebook behind bars

Kane Barratt

A VICIOUS criminal has flouted prison security to brag and put pictures on a social networking website from behind bars.

Kane Barratt was able to update his web page on the Facebook site using a mobile phone. Prison bosses have now launched an investigation.

Prisoners are banned from having mobiles and from using the internet.

Barratt, 20, from Stockport, was jailed after leading a sickening violent crime spree across south Manchester.

Select the "view gallery" link on the right to see pictures from Barratt's Facebook page.

But the MEN has discovered that he has kept in touch with friends and family by updating the internet with words and pictures from his cell at Lancaster Prison in Lancashire.

Through Facebook he:

  • Published pictures of himself taken on a mobile phone posing topless in his cell
  • Asked the chilling question: "who should I put on my hit list today?"
  • Told his girlfriend he was looking forward to seeing her
  • Described his visits to the gym
  • Chatted with pals who were in trouble with the policeĀ

Some of the updates were made using a mobile phone and others appeared to have been done through a computer.

After the MEN told the Ministry of Justice the page disappeared from Facebook.

Barratt, from Edgeley, was jailed indeterminately and ordered to serve a minimum of five-and-a-half years at Manchester Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to two robberies and three burglaries, claiming he had gone on the spree to pay off an underworld debt.

Acid

In one Heaton Norris burglary a man had acid sprayed in his face before an Audi A4 was stolen. Detectives later found Barratt posing in the car on a picture taken with a disposable camera.

In another he and three other men smashed into Paul and Pauline Dillon's Gatley home as they watched television. Waving machetes they hurled Mrs Dillon to the floor and held a knife to Mr Dillon's throat before stealing their Subaru Impreza.

As he sentenced Barratt, Judge Martin Rudland described the attack as 'shocking'. Today Mr Dillon said he was 'absolutely appalled' that Barratt had been able to communicate through a website. He added: "I just can't believe he's not been checked or searched. He'll probably come away from this with all his mates thinking he's some kind of hero."

While on remand, Barratt, who uses the name Kane Reilly on his facebook profile, posted a series of messages about his appearance in court last May for sentencing.

One says: "Big day on friday i find out when I come home cant wait to play out again."

On the day before one reads: "ill no in 24 hours when im home so see you soon."

In updates made last month after he has been sentenced he says: 'I mite be in here but my sole is out there' and another: 'they can put me behind my door but they cant stop time.'

A particularly chilling update says: "Kane is thinking who should I put on the hit list today."

The updates come at different times of the day. Some centre around trips to the gym.

One reads: 'Kane has just had a nice workout at the gym' and another 'Kane has just got up and is going the gym soon'.

Others state: 'cant wait to see my girl today love you loads.'

Support

There are also a host of messages of support from friends.

One reads: "chin up kid... try and ring me if u can wanna speak to u."

While behind bars Barratt also took a quiz on Stockport, had his fortune told. and took an IQ test. He changed his 'status' on a number of occasions from 'engaged' to 'single' and back again.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said they had launched an investigation.

He added: "Prisoners do not have access to mobile phones or the internet, and cannot personally contribute to websites.

"This form of media is totally unregulated and we have no power to remove a social networking profile from the internet.

"Body Orifice Security Scanners (`BOSS chairs') will soon be introduced estate wide. These will be supported by high sensitivity metal detectors and mobile phone signal detectors.

"The Ministry of Justice has contacted Facebook in order to seek their help in assisting the Prison Service in preventing prisoners from making inappropriate postings on their website."

It would have ben nice if the MEN could have given us his facebook details. Then we could all have sent him our own "expressions of support".

Why are these thugs given phones and priorites in prison, this country is to soft, chuck em in a cell with 12 inmates and a bucket full of cockroaches like Bangkok. He looks a tyrant...

If prisoners are banned from having mobiles or access to the internet how was Barrett allowed to do so? Prison should mean prison and not a home from home for people like Barrett.

"Prisoners do not have access to mobile phones or the internet, and cannot personally contribute to websites". What planet is this 'spokesman' on? It's quite clear somebody is not doing their job properly.

Until the Prison's Minister orders an immediate blocking of mobile phone signals from prisons this will go on and on and on along with drug dealings from prison etc . If you go in my local hospital your phone automatically becomes unuseable until you are outside again, why not in prisons , that way no one from Governor down to inmate can use a mobile phone and scum like this piece Barratt would then be able to concentrate on his sentence.

SMUG PICTURE BEFORE BEING SENT TO JAIL NOT SMILING NOW HE IS LOCKED UP AND HIS GIRL FRIEND IS OUT CLUBING EVERY WEEKEND

This is pretty common nowadays, I know of at least 3 others from the area that I grew up in that are currently serving time for drug offences yet update their Facebook from their cells.

Well gone MEN prison should be a punishment, publishing this story shows how lax the prison athorities are unfortunatly I don't think prison will do him any good. For him to have a girlfriend and she is obviously waiting for him but that is what she will be doing for the rest of her life waiting.

I know for a fact that mobiles are widely available in prisons and are used to intimidate and threaten. This is supposed to be punishment and protection for the public but increasingly it feels like we are influenced too much by the liberal minority who have little or no experience of what it is like to be the victim of this scum. We are quick to outsource services to other countries why not prisons ? They can provide prison places in Texas for a fraction of the price that we can in this country - let them go there and get better value for the hard working honest people of this country

Vile scum check the big ears and ugly head yep its a chavvy plug .
I know a person whos b/f is or was inside and looking on her facebook profile he was on it via mobile fone internet access use to take pics and place them on his profile posing with fellow inmates,i find this discusting,im old school my grandfather was head of wardens at hmp manchester(strangeways to us mancs)and you got half an hour dinner and half an hour excersise then banged up,they should have no tv,hifi,no gym use at all all libertys taken.
Any prisoner found in any possesion should have his sentance increased and banged up in solatary confindment....tis countrys soft prison is supposed to break you not make you fit and teach you more ways not to get caught.
My other half was living next door to a drug dealer he was raided he went away(inside)and before he went in was a skinny runt know he looks healthy and cut up....whats the prison system doing no brownie points should be given or earnt just feed them and lock up that door with no liberty.....thats how to run a prison ...sick of soft prison uk human rights its all wrong.

They're not allowed alcohol or drugs either, apparently!

Just what is the point of prison? I thought it was supposed to deny contact with the outside world, whereas this waste of skin can obviously do what he likes on the inside like the rest of them. The picture of him and his three friends looks like a cosy night out in The Village.

PB Crumpsall, I don't want to come off as some sort of namby-pamby person, but an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. If we do to people the same things they have done to others, then we end up teaching them nothing and we'll have a ridiculous situation like in the U.S.A. where they kill people who kill people to show people that killing people is wrong. These people need to be punished, but not in the Biblical (Old Testament) or Qur'anic way

......and you really think that could happen!!!! I bet the little moron has still got his mobile phone.
I bet the little he would cry like a baby if anyone did half to him what he did so callously to others.

it looks to me as though a prison is more like a lads club with the gyms, tv, mobiles etc. What gets me is that these scumbags get al this but the victims take years to recover from what has gone on!!! prison should mean punishment

Report This Reply

how do they get mobiles in? I know phones are small nowadays but jesus I bet its uncomfy.
