Public vote for criminals to clean subway

CRIMINALS had to clean up a subway following a public vote.

People in Bolton were asked to choose an area that could be spruced up by community service offenders as part of the community payback scheme.

The public chose the Churchgate subway, ahead of Farnworth old burial area, the railway area off Pennington Road, the public walkway off Chorley New Road and Seven Acres Country Park.

Offenders spent three days cutting back bushes, removing graffiti and clearing pathways.

Coun Sufrana Bashir-Ismail said: "The community payback voting scheme was really well received.

"Many people think that offenders get an easy ride on community payback, which is not the case."

Bolton is one of six Greater Manchester areas taking part in the government scheme.

everyone in a prison should be made to work on canal towpaths and other places, prison is soooo cushy its about time they were made to pay for their offences!!!!

thats a good start! get the criminals to do stuff like this!

maybe we can the move on the the benefits scroungers we see all day every day doing nothing with their lives. maybe if they have to do this to be entitle to their benefits they might consider going back to work to earn more money then!

then we can start to get this country back on its feet!

I think its a very good idea, along with clearing grot spots and gardening work.Having done some work with community payback I think it would be a good idea if they were made to watch a videobefore going to work in an area. The video could be interviews with local residents of all ages about how car theft, crime in general, anti social behaviour, vandalism, drinking on the street etc affects their lives. It should show the fear people have,to the point where they dont want to leave their own homes. If offenders sit through an hour of this before they start work in an area it might give them some insight into the consequences of their actions, and hopefully set them up with the right attitude towards completing their punishment.

When the public have to vote to clear up a public area. You have
to wonder what the Council are spending ever increasing Council
Tax on.

This will include the prevention and prosecution of those who
cause the mess, barring natural growth.

We should not have to rely on crime being committed to have something done.

Does that include the hundreds of thousands that have been made redundant through no fault of thier own, through the governments inept running of the country. Not all people who are on benefits are scroungers, some are there because they have had no choice.

A good idea. When they've cleaned it up, a lot of them won't be so keen to cause damage again. Surely it's a minimum requirement they should all do what millions of us have to do each day - work. I don't exactly spring with enthusiasm out of bed from Monday to Friday to go there. In that sense, all working people lose their liberty for the greatest majority of the week. It can be viewed as a mental attitude, but work for most people is a kind of prison, as they can't choose what they want to do every day.

presumably once the idea is rolled out nationally and lots more minor criminals find themselves in work gangs, many low paid manual workers will join the unemployed as the jobs they do get handed to chain gangs?

citycentre.Maybe thats aleady happening. For years thosands of people, groups, adults and children have been picking up litter, clearing grot spots and planting flowers and shrubs.Ive not heard any street cleaners or gardeners complaining, mainly because they know it wouldnt have been done anyway, and they tend to live in the areas being cleared.

People who are made redundant and go on benefits are going to have to get used to being the most despised members of any forum,as afraid to admit it as people are afraid to admit what job they do,incase the hatred and generalization gets aimed at them.If there is a division, rather than being between the rich and the poor its between the poor unemployed and the poor, probably minimum waged,as one poster described as like being in prison.

Glad you said that dessie. We've been trying to get Oldham Council to clean up the Rochdale Canal towpath for ages - without success!!
