TWO fire service officers have been suspended for allegedly sending "inappropriate" e-mails.
Salford-based community safety officer Jan Finch and watch manager Mark Sapple, who works at the brigade training centre in Manchester city centre, were sent home on full pay last week.
It is alleged the e-mail included a graphic image of a woman with body piercing with a humorous caption.
The allegation is that Mrs Finch sent the e-mail to Mr Sapple who then forwarded it to a group of people. Among those who allegedly received the e-mail from Mr Sapple was a woman member of the brigade's staff responsible for co-ordinating training courses.
As she looked at it, a senior officer who was standing by her also saw it and decided to make a formal complaint to management.
A brigade source said the e-mail was regarded as "adult humour".
In a statement Greater Manchester Fire Service said: "Two members of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been suspended while an investigation into alleged inappropriate e-mails is carried out.
"As the investigation has not been concluded it would be wrong to make any further comment."
One brigade source said: "The action the brigade has taken in suspending them seems a bit over the top. Everyone else would call it a joke but not Greater Manchester Fire Service."
Both officers declined to comment.
Last month three police workers were suspended over computer porn allegations.
Greater Manchester Police launched an investigation after claims that a member of staff had obscene images on his computer at work. The computers of the other workers were then seized and checked.
As a result, two other members were also suspended. The three are members of the forces Corporate Communications Branch. The section involves about 30 staff working for the press office, public relations department, and internal communications.

we don't live in the ruddy 70's do we?
did you know that the music industry is currently trying to adopt and embrace the successes of the internet porn industry - and apply the same rules for digital music sharing, such is the brilliance and effectiveness of it?? what do those in the upper echelons of power at GMFS do when they see the hen-night fire engine rammed with hunky firemen at deansgate locks? run over and tell them to cover up?
get a life. PC is for weak people - and in this case, i am aware of said email - it was absolutely nothing to baulk at... insignificant. the people who have suspended these no-doubt great servants to saving peoples lives, are - in my opinion - people who love a bit of the old digital eroticism at home.
i bet the same lot - couldn't care less when the brigade are having petrol soaked burning tyres winged at them from kids on inner city council estates - all safe in their little office - no-doubt looking at wrongness through the devils-window itself - the wibbly wobbly web.
get over yourselves and reinstate them immediately.
sad fire people. you ought to be embarrassed in this day and age...

“Greater Manchester Police launched an investigation”
My goodness the police were quick off the mark with this one, it’s a pity the weren’t as quick starting an investigation into some of the MP’s expenses claims and what a waste of tax payers money

I do believe that their employers have gone way OTT in suspending them. As other posters have pointed out, it is the very nature of email and the internet, and the Fire Service should merely have given them a slap on the wrist and a mild warning about the consequences of doing it again. This usually does the trick without branding these people for life

Whoever that person is should hang their head in shame.
Emails are just modern cummuncation medium, banter within a team is good for team spirit and unity. This is just a modern form of what has gone on for years.

Just who is benefitting from this? The fire service? The public? Some self-important IT or HR droid? Get a grip and treat people like adults!

Showing what they look like does not improve the 'story' and is unfair to them.

I also agree with a previous comment that the publication of names and photos concerning an incident which is currently only alleged was not called for.
