A £1.4m crackdown on teenage binge drinking in the summer holidays is to be launched.
Bolton, Lancashire, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan are among 69 `youth crime priority areas' that will get a share of the government cash.
But the sum - which works out as around £20,000 per area - has been slammed as insufficient by campaigners.
Helen Newlove, whose husband Gary was kicked to death by a gang of drunken youths outside his Warrington home, said: "It is not enough money.
"It is not what it says on the tin because it is going to have to be shared among 69 areas."
The money will be used to help councils work with families to identify underlying reasons for problem behaviour.
They will also be expected to tell communities what action they are taking, and to use `tough' enforcement measures, like confiscating alcohol.
The government stressed the money came on top of £24.1m already given to the priority areas - £350,000 each.
Children's Secretary Ed Balls said: "We know that during the summer holidays more young people want to spend time outside with their friends.
"The majority of young people are law-abiding and make a positive contribution to their communities. However, when alcohol is a factor we know that some young people's behaviour can get out of control and this can lead to anti-social behaviour. Communities should not have to put up with this.
"That's why we are determined to keep up the pressure on local areas so that they crackdown on teenage drinking at all times, but especially during the summer months."
Home Secretary Alan Johnson said: "Alcohol, especially in the summer, is one of the main drivers of low level youth crime and anti-social behaviour in our communities and this money will help local authorities and police to combat the problem through a mixture of education, enforcement and cooperation with business."

Then they wonder why there is increasing dependence, violence and anti social behaviour...

I agree with Ace, draconian measures are needed, but directed not at punishing the adolescents, rather cutting off the source of the booze.
You can't step inside Teco's without being confronted with a wall of cheap alcohol, plus pallets of the stuff at the end of each aisle. The country is in the grip of an alcohol pandemic but hardly anyone seems to care.
