ALMOST half of the hard-up families given grants for laptops courtesy of the taxpayer still haven't bought them.
And now an MP is warning them to act quickly or face losing the money as the deadline nears.
As part of a £300m government scheme to give children from poorer families computer access to help their education, credit cards were given to a number of families in Oldham.
The town was chosen alongside Suffolk to pilot the scheme. Most of the Barclaycards had £600 credit but families with children with learning difficulties were given higher amounts.
In total, 3,748 families in the town have received them. They are redeemable at various IT suppliers.
But the M.E.N. can reveal that 46 per cent - around 1,500 families - have still not used them. The cards expire three months after they are sent out.
It is understood some families may be holding on to the cards until their children's birthdays. But council chiefs believe many are now nearing the expiry date. Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Phil Woolas urged parents to act quickly.
He said: "This is a really good scheme and we are lucky to pilot it.
"We need to drill deep to find out why this has happened. What we want to do is raise the ambition of youngsters in our town.
"I suppose even if only half benefit it is worthwhile." immigration minister Mr Woolas added: "Come on Oldham - use it or lose it."
Deputy leader of Oldham council Jackie Stanton backed Mr Woolas's call.
She said: "It is really important that people who have been awarded a Home Access grant act now and use their grant card before it is too late.
"The council want to make sure that as many people as possible can benefit from the pilot scheme, and are aware of the expiry date of their card."
In Suffolk the number of those who have still not used their cards is thought to be much lower - around 20 per cent.

they've just been stuck on ebay! the kids havent even seen them!
its time the benefits system was scrapped and replaced with a voucher scheme! dont give them money direct! if they want money then they'll have to go and get a job!

Why should my hard earned tax money be used to give somebody a free laptop?
Black Flag (15/06/2009 at 11:21)
In essence, this is a voucher scheme.

So they're trying to use this as a cop-out for buying a present for their kids' birthdays?

I can't even afford to get my car through it's MOT next month so I'll probably have to get rid of it, however if I was on mobility, this wouldn't even be an issue.

its about time they just did away with giving free money away to the lazy and bone idle we seem to be encouraging with schemes like this!
if you want to do nothing with your lives then fine! but you wont get anything for it!
if you dont work then you should be recruited into local community projects too to earn any sort of benefits. therefore they'll be working and giving something back!
if we scrapped the current benefits system we'd have so much more money that could be put to better uses like on public transport, health services, policing and other valuable services we need which are very poor at the momment!

Surely this is a better idea than giving someone a credit card with £600 on it. At least these people paid for what they were getting and it gave their children a chance to learn computer skills at home.
Black Flag (15/06/2009 at 16:53)
We've got a country run by people who are elected into their positions and so have to respond in a large part to people who are similiar to you - big on opinions, but small on the knowledge and thinking skills to back them up.

sadly this will never happen.
until we stop with the free bank here we will continue to be worse off!

stop benefits for long term unemployed. if you dont want to work then thats fine. but you wont get anything. see how many go back to work. then we might have more money in circulation in this country which means more business. the need for migrant workers would be reduced too!
stop child benefits. if you want kids then its fine, as long as you can afford to have them. then that might stop alot of children being brought up in poverty! hey that might even reduce teenage pregnancys too!
just these two alone would save millions. those millions could be spent on things we should be getting.
its so simple that so called intelligent people like yourself are ignoring because its too simple!

But what about the ones who can't go back to work? How do you address that? Personally, I think it makes more sense to give a benefit level payment to everybody irrespective of whether or not they are working. That way there are no negative incentives.
"then we might have more money in circulation in this country which means more business."
As Andanotherthing pointed out, it will generally mean that there is less money in circulation.
"the need for migrant workers would be reduced too!"
Which means less business. It means less business for shops, public transport, etc. This is where your over-simplification trips you up, because you count migrant workers as workers, but ignore the fact that they are consumers too.
"its so simple that so called intelligent people like yourself are ignoring because its too simple!"
Yes, because it is too simple. While you're busy congratulating yourself after you've looked at the positives of a particular course of action and decided that it's a perfect solution, intelligent people will be looking for downsides too, so that they've got the complete picture.

That is not what I said Black Flag and you know better. Benefits for the poor are liquid assets for all to prosper from. If you can not save and determine your future you are lost in the sea of ecconomics.
citycentre, manchester (15/06/2009 at 22:25)
you do realise that anything government spends today is from taxes collected today, so if you expect any health or pension spending from government in your later years then there will need to be sufficent tax payers at time to pay for them. if you clear out the immigrants and reduce the birth rate of those left (already below the rate required to maintain population) who do you think that will be?
Black Flag (16/06/2009 at 09:21)
It was precisely what you said, when you said:
"The money paid in benefits does go straight back in to the ecconomy."
and
"The poor have no choice but to spend."
You were absolutely right too. When people have more money than they need for their immediate needs, they are more likely to save some of it, which takes money out of circulation.
