TWO cops angered drivers after they were spotted riding in the wrong direction down a one-way street on their horses.
Motorist Lyndon Cunningham caught the two mounted officers going against oncoming traffic on the one way street in Altrincham without a criminal in sight.
The policemen were going along Oxford Street when Mr Cunningham, from Oak Road, Hale, challenged them.
He said: "I was parking my car when I noticed two officers riding slowly against traffic.
"It was ridiculous. Cars began to build up as they navigated around the horses. The two police officers seemed unaware, chatting among themselves and taking in the day.
"Surely it isn't sensible to ride two police horses side by side down a one way street. They are bigger than my car." As they approached his car Mr Cunningham asked whether horses were exempt from the Highway Code.
One of the officers allegedly informed him that it `only applies to mechanically propelled vehicles, not horses'.
The Highway Code says a person riding a horse on the road is expected to `move in the direction of the traffic flow in a one-way street' and `ride in single file on narrow or busy roads.' A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Protection of Accidents said: "We would like to know why they were doing that.
"Unless there's a very good reason they should follow the normal rules of the road."
Despite violating the Highway Code, the actions of the officers were not illegal, but GMP are investigating the incident.
A spokesman said: "We have received a complaint in relation to mounted officers and the Professional Standards Branch is currently looking into the matter."

When the highway code was put together in about the 12th century the majority of road users were pedestrians or horse riders.
It would be madness to ride a horse along a road with your back to the traffic especially with all the incompetent motorists that we see.
Get a life and be thankful that there is a visible police presence.

to quote the story "the actions of the officers were not illegal".
Sure it wasnt the most sensible thing to do but it was not illegal. they probably get a talking to but thats all. i dont see the problem myself, id'm just happy to see the police on the street.
for all you police haters, how about we have a month with no police what so ever?
you'll soon be screaming for them back after you've been robbed and stabbed.
Please MEN, less of the trash negative police stories, how about some good news. I'm sure the press department dish out stories to you guys, it just you choose never to run with them. spread a little positve energy and maybe people will start behaving a little better.

it would be an interesting experiment; any idea how much tax we could expect to get back to use to protect ourselves?

We used to get police cars with blue lights going the wrong way down Oxford Street in the city centre and I witnessed a number of serious near misses with pedestrians. Thankfully they don't do it any more. I presume because somebody had the sense to complain.

The police should not be encouraging horse riders that to ignore the Highway Code is sensible.
MEN do a wonderful job news gathering. They are a credit to the North West.

Why has the MEN got it in for the police so much?
I'm glad to see the police around. Let's have more, not less.
