The 43-year-old was sentenced to 28 days by Macclesfield magistrates after she admitted failing to ensure the girl attended school regularly. Cheshire East council brought the case after the child went to just 11 out of 81 school sessions between October 9 and December 19 last year.
The court heard of the mother's `total failure' to co-operate with education welfare officers, who have been involved with the family since 2001.
The Macclesfield mum, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has two previous convictions relating to her daughter's truancy.
A council spokesman said: "The mother was in serious danger of jeopardising her daughter's educational opportunities." Tweet

a child does not have to be educated at school, she could have wrote to the school and told them she wanted home education,A council spokesman said: "The mother was in serious danger of jeopardising her daughter's educational opportunities,if the girl liked school, she would go,also i dont think schools should teach sex education to 5 year olds.at the end of the day, what a waste of time putting this woman in prison,
well the latest is that schools are going to ban children from school if they have not had the MMR jabs. My child is not getting this jab, so what then? He will be banned from school.......then will I be locked up too? This country makes me sick. Wake up people, we are being controlled and manipulated and its only going to get worse.
david bakey, what is the chance of this person not only writing to the school but actually giving her a home education ?
I do agree that it is a waste of time putting her in prison.
Could do with these Magistrates coming to Bury, my neighbours kids are never at school, playing music all day.
Children have to go to school, that's the law. Parents are responsible for their children to go to school. If they don't go who's to blame.....I believe the parents. If there were problems before and they weren't sorted out, who's fault is it?
It's about time parents realised that kids of 12 or 13 are not adults and cannot decide for themselves. Even at 15, 16 these days they always need responsible guidance. Well done.

That is not the law Chelly. Home Education is an option, a child may never step foot in a school and it is legal.
Andanotherthing Mcr. in this situation, as in many, who would be responsible for educating children at home? Alot of families decide for home tutoring and there is a protocol to follow. When a child is enlisted to a school, that child must attend and it is the responsibilty of a parent to ensure that at least they show up. Who is to blame?
